Loo Knee ,

Are we doing it outside PMF or are you gonna follow me to mine (2 mins away)?

Also are you doing it 2moro morning? , if so do you want me to bring anything?

Rags, cardboard to kneel on etc?

Hi,

Well Loo Knee has been down and we have had a look. It is actually the sump gasket after all. I took off the engine cover underneath the sump and it was there.

Going to get a new sump gasket 2moro with a new oil filter and 5 litres of semi synthetic genuine vauxhall oil.

Just got to sort out the rams not working now (in another post)   :-/

are you deffinatly sure its the sump gasket.i beleve thats most unusal on the omega. its not the front crankshaft oil seal? i went through this problem with my mates omega first we thought it was that oil sensor then we were convinced it was crank oil seal ended up it was cam caver gaskets . the oil was running down the middle of the v passing the water pump and crank pulley on the way...?

Hi,

If i look under the car the sump gasket is smothered in it. I did notice a little bit by the camcovers but cant see it running down (but i didnt look that much to be honest)

the best thing you could do is cover it with gunk and hose it down. then keep a close eye on it. you should be able to catch its where abouts then. theres no point in changing the sump gasket if its not that.

Hi,

I might have a proper look 2moro , and hose it down underneath then.

Also when i have the blowers on in the car i smell an oily smell , not all the time but its there. And when ive been out in the car , i get out of the car and can smell hot oil.

Will this be because of the oil leak?

When we got the under cover off you could see that the engine around the Crank Pulley and the Pressure Switch was dry no sign of oil.
The Sump Gasket looked to be soaked in oil (the gasket looked thicker in some parts than others as though it was swollen!) but the bolts weren't loose.
Pulled up the front drivers side plug lead and there is oil in the well which touchs the bottom of the lead.
One of the two smaller breather pipes that fit onto the rear of the Plenum was split which we cut and refit.
Both Multi Rams are not working either which must be the reason Matt thinks the car seems sluggish.

Personally I would change the Cam Cover Gaskets, clean the breathers whilst I had the scuttle panel off and would be lookin for an air leak somewhere.
If like some of you think it could be the Cam Cover Gaskets thats causing the leak, once they are done if that oil leak is still there I would then do the Sump Gasket.

yes deffinatlly thats what allways happens. infact its usally because its burning off the exhaust manifolds. i tell you mate i would bet money on these cam cover gaskets being the culprit when you find out id love to know .. ;)

My money is on the cam cover gaskets too,  given this is a very common condition on the V6's.

I suggest removing the plenum (excellent guide on here), cleaning the breathers (I would do that on any new acquisition anyway) and while you are there pull the plug leads and check for oil on both banks - also have a good feel around the outside - they can leak either outwards (results in burnt oil smell as oil drips onto exhaust and that all Omega owners are familiar with  ;)) or inwards into the plug wells, or both.   If you are really convinced they are ok then look elsewhere.  It is an averagely painful job to change them esp passenger side, and not for free (c. 50 quid for the gaskets, sealant etc), but if leaking they need doing or will require even more painful and expensive jobs elsewhere in future.

While the plenum is off , worth changing plugs if that is anywhere near due, and have a look at the HBV round the back to check that is not showing signs of leaking coolant.   If its not,  it will do sometime and its worth knowing where it is.

BTW remember that gravity will result in the leaked oil moving generally downwards, so if you see it on the sump rim it just means its coming from somewhere above (and not necessarily straight above either..)

Good luck!

Hi,

Yeah i will definitely let you know how i go on.

I think i will buy the camcover gaskets, sump gasket and spark plugs to go with the oil and oil filter that i bought today.

Will then tackle them all in one go.

Dont know if loo knee wants to give me a hand again when hes free (cheeky)  ;) ;) ;)

Don't mind giving you a hand :y

You say you have got your oil and filter? did you get Vauxhall Oil?

I would just get your Cam Cover Gaskets (there are 4) + O rings + black sealant P/N 90485251 first, we will do the breathers and plugs if you want too, see if we can find an air leak too, but i would leave the sump gasket. On the off chance it is the Cam Covers leaking not the sump like a lot of the guys on here think. :y

This is why this Forum is so great though, alot of the lads on here get helped at sometime or other, and in turn they help where they can in return.. :y

If you take that sealant part number to Greenhous with you, you will be sure to get the right one. You need the "O" rings too they seal inside where the Cam Cover Bolts go through the Cam Cover. Also mention that you work for JCB you will get 10% off :y

Hi,

Is it best to get the camcover gaskets from greenhous or will i get them cheaper from somewhere else?

Also,

Went to shelton auto spares on stoke road today , got 5 litres of gm vauxhall 10/40 semi synthetic oil for £11. Thats cheap isnt it?

So if i get the o rings, camcover gaskets and spark plugs 2moro , when would you be able to give me a hand mate?

p.s  Im very good with computers or mobile phones incase you or anybody needs any help with that?!
