Couple of questions
« on: 19 August 2007, 14:43:43 »

I've been thinking of getting a 2.5TD omega, there just a couple of things I'd like to know.

Do all 2.5 TD omega's have the BMW engine (If not what other engine do they have)?

What's the MPG of the 2.5 TD omega and the 2ltr 16v omega so I can compare them?

Oddly enough currently I have both a TD Estate (BMW engine) & a 2 litre Estate
I have recorded the MPG on the TD for the last 4 years & it gives an average of 32.49 over a cummulative 66K miles
The 2 litre had a MID and is giving an average of 32.4 so there is no difference as far as I am concerned
Both are automatics so this seems a reasonable comparison
(Incidently the 2 litre is for sale as it was only bought when I thought the TD was going to be written off as a result of driving it into flood water, luckily when inspected no damage had been caused to the motor so it has been dried out & no longer smells
If anyone is interested in the 2 litre, it's on the For Sale section of this site)

All Omega 2.5TDs are the BMW engine.  Expect around mid 30s MPG, its not good around town, but decent on a run.  The big killer is the stupidly short service interval - 4.5k.

In Omega spec (120BHP), it is a poor engine performance wise.  Its not that special in BMW spec (143BHP) either.  In std guise, its an overrated engine.  A member here, Omegatoy, has a chipped one, and it apparently goes like stink.

I've tuned 2 of mine before now and would say that they were faster than the V6 by far  :y

Being turbo, they have potential for decent power. Not sure how far you can go before you run a huge risk of damage.

If its an auto, it will need new box before chipping.

Interestingly, early facelifts still had the 2.5TD engine, but these are quite rare because the 2.2DTi engine replaced it after a few months.

Isn't HBV only on AC equipped cars?

Yes, but all MAF ones (97/98 on) should be A/C  :-/

Earlier tractors don't have HBV, even with a/c
