any body no what a HCV valve is???
« on: 19 August 2007, 00:18:15 »

just bought a 1996 3.0 elite which was driving fine for the first 200 miles but now it seems to get rather hot however the temp reach's 100 but doesnt go in the red because the fan kicks in, the dreaded engine managment light came on and you can hear slight hissing from the header tank when you turn the engine off but it doesn't seen to be loosing much (if any) water, I rung the guy who I bought it off and he said it is the hcv valve at the back of the engine but I'v never heard of one and cant seem to find any on ebay or owt, can anyone shed any light on this, cheers :'(

Think he means the heater bypass valve.
It 's at the back, and can leak?

If youdo a search you should be able to find a picture?

NOt sure why the header tank is hissing?

100C is way too hot. Way, way too hot.

Flush the coolant system with Forte cooling system flush, refill with 50:50 antifreeze, and see what happens.

As you know TB mine goes between 90 and 100 and this does not seem to be a problem, so I would say that as long as the fans cool it down it should be OK... the coolant flush and change is a good idea though.

I,v removed the heater bypass valve because when I revved the car from under the bonnet it squirted at me like a water pistol from that area but the valve itself doesnt look damaged, does anybody know how or if there is any way of bypassing this until my new 1 arrives so I can still use the car for work in the mean time???

Trouble is, the gauge starts to lie badly above mid point. 100C is actually nearer 110C, which is getting near danger point I would have thought.  I know tractors suffer at 110C...

I understand that leaking HBV can result in air being drawn into the coolant system with resulting over pressurisation (hissing cap), and over heating.

If you flush the system,  try to flush the radiator seperately too...  flush, reverse flush...  they block very easily once the crud has been losened from around the engine..

the new hbv should be here anytime, in the meantime I have flushed the system twice and I'm just about to do the paper clip test as I think I may need a new coilpack, when driving at 30mph its nice and smooth but when I put my foot down it feels like its running on 5 for a few seconds and then back to 6 and so on, only had it a week and I'v been off the road 2 days already, at least when its done its done!!    >:(

Since you have an EML light on, and a Crank Sensor code, this is more likely
to be the ECU putting you into 'Limp Mode'. This hesitation will probably clear up
when you fix the Crank and Knock sensor defects, and the ECU suspends the
'Limp Mode'.

If the HBV has been squirting boiling hot water all over the back of the engine, it's a pound to a penny it's knackered the dis pack(coil pack)
