Help needed on coolant loss + big oil leak
« on: 24 August 2007, 09:36:01 »

Further to my previous post yesterday about a very sudden loss of coolant several people pointed me in the direction of the HBV.  I've had everything required to gain access to the HBV off the car and there soesn't seem to be a HBV there.  I can clearly see the DIS pack, coolant bridge and pipes going into it, i've had a good poke around and followed every pipe I can see to find out where it goes but there is no HBV at the back of the engine.

Secondly there is a decent sized puddle of oil on the ground around the back of the engine, any ideas as to what has caused this?

I'm now suspecting the oil cooler but what else could it be.

Just stripped it all down further to get to the oil cooler and the union nearest the back of the engine and the area around it is totally covered in oil.

The smaller pipe on the left of the coolant bridge goes to the throttle housing and the larger pipe in the centre comes round to a valve located directly under the expansion tank which in turn has another pipe that goes through the bulkhead just next to the brake servo.

Is the oil cooler plate loose, or signs of (water) leak?

As to HBV, I'm guessing no a/c?

There is some red staining at the rear of the engine on the left but nothing is loose, it's not that easy to tell if the plate has any signs of water as there is oil everywhere.

Yes, it's a proper old fashioned poverty spec omega with no a/c
