Hiya guys, having some problems with my fuel pump in the tank.  

Basically it doesnt work, so i was wondering whether they are serviceable or if it will need replacing.

If it does need replacing, does anyone have one that i could purchase?? or will i have to pay through my nose at Vx??

Not repairable so it's  replacement
Mine cost £115 about a year ago
Fitting it in the top of the tank is easy but very smelly, wear surgical gloves as a precaution

Is it worth me trying to source a 2nd hand one, cos i dont really like the sound of £115 tbh.

Take it out and clean the pickup strainer first.......

It's what my 'tame' mechanic charged me - he ended up smelling of diesel. that's why In had him do the job!

So im guessing it was £115 for the job done, not just the part on its own??

If its gonna be loads then i might just buy a cheapo electric pump and plumb it in myself for the time being.

Pump is submerged in the tank so you don't have the option of a cheap alternative fix!

If you do it yourself, take care replacing the rubber seal on the pump/sender unit when putting it all back together - they are quite easy to get slightly twisted on assembly - you can't see it too well - until the next time you fill the tank to the top - embarrassing or what!

Had a go at pulling my pump out today without much luck tbh...

Got the the big plastic, threaded ring off and pulled the steel plate of the pump aside and looked into the tank.

Three little clips seemed to be all that was holding the actual pump in the centre of the white housing, so unclipped these and the pump came up about 5mm then stopped hard and wouldnt come any further. So does anyone know how the pump comes out alone or do i have to remove the whole plastic assembly??

I was hoping to remove the pump and inspect it as well as cleaning the pickup strainer (thanks Mark DTM) but its proving to be a pain.

Any help would be apprecaited, ive put an ad in the wanted section for a 2nd hand pump cos Vx quoted me £111.04 for a new one!! (Part No. 90509674) OUCH!!

I seem to recall that the pumps on the diesel dont actualy operate for very long......just enough to get the engine started!

The main injection pump is the one that does all the work, the tank one is just to ensure the injection pump gets some fuel so it can start sucking...

The pump in the fuel tank is powered directly from the alternator output meaning that with the "ignition on" but the engine not turning the pump would not be doing unecessary work.
In order to get the engine running in the first place the pump is also connected to the glowplug relay meaning that it "primes" the system during this short period.

Draw your own conclusions as to what happens when the engine is at temperature so that the glowplug relay doesn't activate but you've lost some fuel in the system due to leaks somewhere (ie rotten leak-off pipes etc).....
