Wheres my oil going ????????
« on: 30 August 2007, 10:20:04 »

Right I'm losing the will to live, I've already spent enough on my car to now see the "CHECK OIL LEVEL" display appear on my dash,

So I did check my oil and I had to put a litre in to top it back up to the full marker, a week later and after using my car for work for the week, the "CHECK OIL LEVEL" appeard again, and yes the oil level had dropped again  >:(

My car has done 75,000 miles, there are no oil leaks anywhere in the engine bay, and I belive............... now checking my backbox it appears to look a bit oily inside...........................so whats the potential problem?

Is it the piston rings ? I don't mind using a little oil evey month, but a litre every week :o

Kev (about to scrap his 2.2 x reg) :'(

You checked the plug wells for oil?

If the underside of the engine is dry then it must be burning it, either from rings or valve stem oil seals.

If the stem seals, this usually shows with an initial blue smoke cloud on startup from cold as the oil thats lubricating the head when running seeps past the valse stems and into the piston bores.  When started, the oil burns off, hence the cloud to the rear.

If no blue cloud on startup, could be pointing towards rings.  No doubt someone clever will better advise, but I read that number1 bore/piston is the one likely to fail most on the 2.2??

I'm sure you've already checked, but in case you haven't, are the breathers clear?

That's very low miles for engine wear, unless the servicing has been grossly neglected (or been ragged from cold).

hotel21's suspicion is that it is your cam cover seal that's gone.  This can either leak inwards into the plug wells, and/or outwards down the block.  So pull the plug leads and see if they are soaking in oil.

If so get it fixed pronto - its easy enough on 4 pot and if left will have consequences for HT leads...
