Play in Steering??
« on: 01 September 2007, 19:12:17 »

I went to have the omega properly 4 wheel tracked today, the backs were out massively but it still pulls to the left after it was done so they had it back on the ramp and said there was a lot of play in the steering box. They didn't charge me and said bring it back when you get it sorted and they'll redo it.
But is there anyway to pick up the slack or do I need to change the box completely and if so how much is one and is it going to be a dealer only part?
Cheers Rich

I'd be skeptical that play in the steering box would cause a pull to the left - that's usually a wishbone bush failure.

The steering box can be simply tightened up with an allen key and a spanner (if I remember correctly). I think there may be a maintenance guide or FAQ on it.

I've changed everything up front, both wishbones, both shockers, both top mounts, both tie bars, both complete track rods.
Thats why I can't understand whats wrong.

Steering box VERY unlikley. Steering idelr possibly.

So, why did these muppets do the tracking before working out there is a problem with the steering?

They only looked like YTS's but it's the only place I could find that would track the back up as well!

If you've disturbed the front knuckles by changing the shock absorbers you need to get the camber checked and set - that's not the same as the tracking. That could be your problem.

The machine they put it on at the place I had it tracked was quite fancy all connected up to a PC, it showed the Camber too, it was spot on, on the Nearside and only 2 degrees out on the offside, would that be enough to make it pull so much to the left?
