Autobox newbie questions
« on: 02 September 2007, 09:25:40 »

First time with an autobox fluid change..

I have a few questions would appreciate any advice from those who've been there before me :y

- Filter
I understand that its possible to clean and reuse the filter.  Haynes mentioned 'solvent' and I think someone on here used white spirit.   What is recommended?  Obviously I don't want to leave any residue which may harm the new Dex 3.

Haynes also mentions a 'seal' .  Is this a small oring type affair that sits around the key slot hole in the top of the filter?  If so, this remained on the main body of the transmission - there are traces of glue on the filter.   Does this mean I need a new filter, as BoL says the seal is not available on its own..?

- oil
I drained about 5L out including both sumps.   Is that about right?   If I get 6L to refill, will that be enough?

- gaskets
been using a paint scraper to remove the old gasket from the sumps and body - its hard going to remove all the crap esp. as some of the gasket is stuck to the sump rim in between the two sumps.  Is there a solvent that will clean up the surfaces nicely?

Cheers,

Ian

The seal on the filter is a small 1" square piece of cork with a hole in...

5l out sounds about right - it holds 8 - 9l, only half comes out...

Thanks TB :y.  The seal seems to be in good nick although attached to the main body rather than filter.  Think I'll just leave it in situ with a dab of gasket goo if I can clean the filter ok.

Petrol seems to disolve Dex3 so will try that to clean the filter.

Some people here bought the filter from www.jpat.co.uk , my understanding is that it is this item:

and that the cost is around £30 , might be worth just changing it while you're there...

I meant loctite gasket compound on the filter gasket.   but I doubt it's needed as the gasket looks ok.  don't particularly want to change the filter for no good reason.
