I have a prob with the meega. The timing is very very precise (big thanks to Andyb for the lend of the locking kit!)
NEW, plugs, leads, dispack and crank sensor - head gasket done too.
The multi rams work too.

Idles at 400RPM
Does 13-14 to the gallon
Stinks of unburnt fuel
Definite misfire
Struggles going up hills unless in 2nd
EML goes straight out
Takes a bit to fire in the morning?

Fly's after 4-5K (well sort of).


Looking for any other ideas - I have a couple but want to hear if it strikes someone as obvious before I spend £silly amounts.

Air leaks tend to raise the revs I think?

Was changed less than 1k ago. It did misfire before I bought it but thought it was because of the hgf (which I did).

I best come clean now...  
It has a chip (superchips - not a crappy one) and a twin decat. I didn't want to mention this before as it would in the main firing line!
I changed back to the standard VX chip and.... nothing, didn't want to know - the starter motor turned and that was about it.

This is a long shot, but I had a vaguely similar problem with my old 95 Miggy and it turned out to be a pooped coolant temperature sensor. I didn't get an EML light and it took the agent several attempts to locate the cause. The sensor tells the ECU what temperature the coolant is so the mixture is then adjusted accordingly (i.e like a choke). As I say, it is a long shot, but it could just be that a knackered sensor could be making your car run far too rich. Mine used to pink like hell going up hills (agent told me it was rattling heat shields - tw*t) and would idle at numbers in the thousands.

Cheers, this was 1 of my thoughts, Only thing is I would of of thought it would make it idle higher - mine doesn't.....

The gauge (separate sensor) gives me the feeling the CTS is working properly with the fans kicking in at the right time etc.

My last car (not a vauxhall) i did some welding on the exhaust and when i refitted i had the lamba sensors round the wrong way (twin pipe system) and did exactly what you describe. Drank fuel, stank off fuel, and had no guts.

If you've recently done exhaust work could be this or might be faulty lamba, but would of thought the engine management light would show if these went, also an expensive part to replace if not faulty.

That does sound possible, they took the whole exhaust off and refitted before I bought it.

Will check this in the morning.

I can't offer any suggestion but your car didn't sound very healthy as you drove away. At least it was down hill!
I have both types of temp sensor here if you want to try - bought 1 'lost' it, bought another and when I removed the original it wasn't the same as I'd bought so Vx swapped it for the later type .... just need to get around to fitting it.

The operation of the fans and gauge is an entirely separate issue. The dummy at Vx tried to tell me that everything was fine because the fans came on even the the Tech 2 was showing Device Not Present for the CTS. If the CTS is pooped it will be telling the ECU all kinds of porkies about the coolant temperature - or not talking to it at all, as in my case.

I just noticed that your idle is only around 400rpm. It is true that if the CTS is telling the ECU it is colder than it really is, the fuel mixture will be richer and the idle speed would indeed be higher. Sorry I missed that.  

I still suspect a sensor or possibly a faulty multi-ram. Have you checked all the connections on the latter? Someone on here was having all sorts of problems with his car recently and traced the fault to one of the rams not being connected properly. Go round all of them to make sure they are fully seated and that the jubilee clips are tight.
