The cheap Tech2 as sold on ebay should be able to read your fault codes unfortunately yours won't do the simple paperclip test so you need the cable to DIY.
When you get a fault code post it up and someone will advise.

If you want to read your own fault codes you will need one. VX are known to charge a good few quid unless you can bribe one of the fitters to do it for a couple of pints.

Are you not at crossed purposes John? Sevice light, not EML light showing engine faults. Removing the service light on the later Omegas is something like an Astra G's 'INSP' display on the odometer. Press & hold the trip reset, turn ignition on but do not start car. The "INSP"should cancel.

I think so. Mine's an earlier car without it. I'm sure that when the rest of the world gets up tomorrow someone in the know will confirm one way or t'other.

This car hasn't got a 'service light'. I am sure that this is the Engine Management Light'. The last time I had a problem, and our cars are the same model and age, it was a problem with the Mass Airflow Sensor and I had that changed by Vx.

It was obviously late and my brain addled when I first replied. Just looked at the Astra G hand book, the one with a spanner is the EML and the 'engine block' is emmisions problems. Sorry caolan_p for the confusion. :-[  :-[

You need the codes read, you could have a potential fault looming.

As I said, you need to get the fault codes read.

Sadly P, I am not in the least bit qualified to tell you about mass airflow sensors. There are several posts about them like this one. All I was saying was that we have the same model and year of car and sometimes cars have similar faults. What I would suggest is that you get it checked out by someone with a Tech2 to give you details of the fault. If it is the MAF it shouldn't be that difficult to change yourself.  :)
