Newbie EGR or ICV??

Hi Everybody,

Been told my omega has a problem with egr?

What would be the symptoms of this?

My symptoms are : doesnt feel that quick, doesnt idle perfectly like my mates does at work

symptoms could be as you said- when mine packed up it wouldn't idle at all.
sounds like its sticking- take it off (front right of plenum as you look at it) soak it in carb cleaner, that might free it up. if not get another one, they are not too dear.

On the V6 the gubbins on the front right corner of the intake plenum (large alloy thing with Ecotech on the plastic bit) is the ICV or Idle Control Valve.  The EGR or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve is the gubbins to the left side as you look at the engine from the front.  They are normally a bit rusty looking and beneath, you should see a corrugated pipe contrivance going down towards the exhaust.

It will be the ICV you need to clean.  Remove electrical connector to the rear, remove hose and clip to the front, pop the gubbins out the rubber holder and seal into the plenum.  Squirt a good dose of carb cleaner into the openings, cover with the fingers to prevent escape then shake it all arouind for several minutes.  Repeat a few times until all seen to be clean inside.  Lightly oil with a few drops of 3 in1 (not WD40) and reassemble.

Do not be tempted to put anything down the holes to scrape the crud off, you will damage the internals.

If EGR is playing up just remove it at the base and makse up a blank out of a coke can or similar and then replace the EGR back on over the plate. Job done ;)

Thia is very similar to my problem...

going to clean the icv tomorrow morning. Wouldnt blanking off the egr do something to the engine? , i dont understand how to blank it off anyway , can you go into more depth with pics if possible please

It wont do anything to the engine.

EGR is fitted to meet certain NOx levels in certain countries and is not tested at MOT time, the EGR effectively lowers the cylinder temps by diluting the fuel/air mix with an inert gas (in this case exhaust gases as it has no oxygen left in it) and in doing so, the levels of NOx are also reduced.

So, no problem with blocking it off but, you need to sandwich a thin plate between the valve and base and retain the valve to keep the engine management happy.

So do i put the blanker between the egr and the side of the plenum or between the egr and base?

Yep, pop EGR off (two torx head bolts) and then refit with the blanking plate.

It should be assembled in the following order.

1) Base
2) Metal gasket (old one can be re-used)
3) blanking plate
4) EGR valve

Job done!
