The Crack of Doom
« on: 14 September 2007, 23:34:49 »

My passenger door is busy tearing itself apart. The plate has come away down one side.
Is it still repairable with the strenthening plates or has it gone too far?

Vauxhall produce a repair section to replace the check strap mount that is spot welded inside the door frame if it's too far gone for just the reinforcing plates.
It's not too hard to replace, means taking the door off, drilling out the spot welds, then fitting the new section. If you, like me, don't fancy welding the replacement, 3/16 or larger pop rivets look to have around the same contact area as spot welds and have held up on mine.
There are of gotchas, if you have electric windows you need to remove the front window guide before you disconnect the door  and at least one of spot welds is hidden under a sealig rubber.

Here are a couple of photos, it looks pretty bad.
http://
I guess that bit of metal my finger is behind is where the plate should be!

http://
It looks like the metal is tearing round the bottom bolt as well

Is there any problem with just using it without the check strap?

Oh yes! Funnily enough it's the passenger door like Paul. You would think the driver's would go first.

Paul, did the plates do yours OK?

that will be ok once the repair panels are in place.......

Mine was worse than that, what i did though was to grind down the absolut minimum from the plate that sits on the outside of the door, the one that sits on the inside was left complete, i worked on the theory that the bigger the plate the more force could be distributed over a greater area.

Took me a few hours, and the fact that it is so badlt twisted will make it a little more difficult to get the bolts in place as well, good luck  :y

Yes, that should repair ok with the kit. It's only pence to put right and there's a 'how 2' in the appropriate section  :y

Using a door without the check strap will make it very heavy if parked on an incline. Likewise, if there's a gust of wind, the door will slam shut and really, you don't want it closing on somebody's leg! If you've got kids, I wouldn't let them use it.

Guys, as it says, they don't have the information on the parts/fix readily available just give them the part numbers and hope for the best  ;)
