Does this sound like HBV??
« on: 25 September 2007, 17:25:44 »

Right, as you may be aware from the thread in General Chat, I had some issues with the Omega yesterday which caused me to get it towed home...

It now has the following symptoms...

Engine starts and idles fine when its cold, and drives ok.  Feels slightly down on power though.
Once its warmed up (around 95deg on the dash) it starts to miss a bit and does progressively get worse.  It also looses power on acceleration and really struggles.  It doesn't appear to drive through it either.

When parked up after its warmed up and playing up, there is steam coming from the back of the engine, and the coolant level is sometimes same as it was prior, or just a bit lower (1cm is the most I've noticed)

Also, it does drip water from the rear of the engine after it's done this.  Not a great amount, but just enough to be noticed.  The display will also read Check Coolant, but as said quite a few times on here, the sensor is usually always to fault...

Now Pete said it does sound like HBV, but also did mention that there may be a slight chance the oil cooler plate didn't seal correctly.

Also another thing to note is it takes a hell of a time to start reaching temperature.  I can drive about 3 miles and its still not gone above the lowest, then it starts climbing.  The header tank is also cold when its about 95deg on the dash while idling on the drive.  Thermostat??  Or normal...

Oh, and the main fan doesn't kick in either, the temperature will slowly climb to 100 in traffic, and then the only ones which do are the smaller ones infront of the A/C rad (even with Eco on) but I can't tell if its 1 fan or 2...

Normal running temp for the engine while driving is usually between 90 to 95deg, and only goes upto 100 in traffic.

as its a fairly simple and cheap job its certainly worth doing HBV, its located back just left of centre if you face the engine...and yes it often results in some drip dripping underneath..

Sounds like you may have a misfire , any oil in the wells, how recent is the dispack and ignition leads?

Due to location its possible a leaking hbv can cause dispack issues resulting in a misfire :-/

Engine reaching normal temperature lately: Thermostat problem..

When HBV start loosing water also very good idea to check oil cooler+ gasket..Mine had those problems..

Markie - I bought the car from Pete after he had done loads of work to it (oil cooler replacement, breathers all cleaned out, rocker gaskets done as they were... gone) before he did the work, the plug wells were filled with oil, and it was all running down the engine.  When the engine is warm now it does start to smell of oil, but will just be burning off...  I was thinking though about the HBV dripping on the coilpack causing issues aswell, but Pete also said the leads do need replacing as they are the original ones just all cleaned up.

cem_devecioglu  - As said, the oil cooler has literally just been replaced aswell as the rocker gaskets & breathers being cleaned out.  But the engine is still taking an age to reach normal running temp according to the dials so yeah I'm wonderin if its worth getting the thermostat done aswell...

I know on startup one of the electric waterpumps (the one at the front by the radiator) makes a lovely whining noise like the bearings have gone, but it shuts off after a few seconds from starting!

that would be my first port of call then, replaced them on my misfiring estate and the difference was remarkable...

doesnt explain your coolant loss, expect (obviously) you may have two different issues

Leads will be done soon enough :)

Coolant loss though for now I'm putting it down to the leak to the rear of the engine.  I did a HC sniffer test on the coolant itself, and the solution stayed blue.  But was told that it hardly ever works anyways so thought it a bit of a wast of time doing it...

Wont be anything as sinister as that, no worries there  :)

Id go for HBV and Leads as a £70 -£80 fix ( hbv on trade and leads by Bosch can be had for £50)

1 days work, car just may run like new afterwards  :y

Markie - I'll update on progress when I get it sorted out :)

cem_devecioglu - It's on 159k Miles atm (around 255885 km's if my maths is right...) and is a Dec '98 registered car.

Then little investment on sensors sounds right if you want to keep the car..
