Manual gearbox problem
« on: 28 September 2007, 14:56:15 »

the gear stick in the TD omega i have is causing me some greif. clutch seems fine but gearchange is like stiring a bucket of nails.

the gearstick has no definate pattern eg, the H formation .and is hard to select, clutch bites in the middle as i belive it should. could this be bushes or similar

car pulls well when in gear and does not slip at all. also clutch is not noisy.

any thoughts? cheers

A friend of mine had a similar problem with a Citroen he owned. The problem in his case lay with the rods that link the gear leaver to the box (3 in his case) The ball joints in the rods had worn badly, making the gear lever very slopy.  Fitted new rods, was like new, only cost around £20.  Might be worth having a look underneath to see if they are the cause.

Unclip the rubber boot under the car beneath the gearstick and check the clamp joints are nice and secure.

Definitely sounds like the selector mechanism. I had a similar issue with an Audi I owned a while back, there was a plastic ball joint thing under the gaiter that I replaced and it was good as new. There's a fair chance something is loose though as suggested by JasonH, cos my Omega shift is still tight and it's over 170,000 miles now :o
