Have today been on 150 mile run and the temp at running speed on the M25 was between 92 & 95 on the gauge. when i start to drive on slower roads the temp quite quickly climbs to about 98 when the fan cuts in. The car does not over heat or give any problems but i am almost sure that the rad fan is not running at full speed. The temp does come down more  quickly if i raise the engine revs  to 2000rpm but again rises when the motor returns to idle.  I have also noticed today that when i switch the ign on when hot, the gauge climbs above 100 then settles back to about 95. The car has recently had a coolant flush [with forte] and a new water pump[gen vx] and filled with red antifreez to a 50/50 mix. The car is not losing any coolant at all.  :-?

Any ideas as to what the problem may be, Gary.

Hi Gary, ever since Iv'e owned my miggy (6 mnths) the temp gauge has been a bit erratic, sometimes goes quite high but if I tap the dash it drops down again, so could be bad joint on back of gauge but rather than tear it all apart to see what's going on I just put up with it, have any other oofers had this prob I wonder? Of course your prob may be caused by something completly differant :-/ p.s. I went in the hooden on the green in mitcham back in the summer & came out unscathed LOL...phil

Also something which I noticed on mine...  When the HBV packed up, the car would get hotter quicker than before, and since it's been replaced, its now running much cooler and not going above 95deg.

May be worth a check or even just replacing it on the side of caution given they don't cost too much!

Check the 30 amp fuses in the fusebox to ensure they are not blown.....   :y

Also check the earth straps to the engine. Maybe a loose earth is causing electrical load to affect the temperature sensor readings. It's normal for the V6 fan to come on at a slow speed first. If the temperature continues to rise above a second threshold the fan runs at full speed.

There is a test connector for the fans and relays in the engine compartment fuse/relay box near the battery. Try the below link which is actually a diagram for the Cadillac Catera (the US Omega).
The test proceedure is identical to the Omega. Hope it helps.

yes i did have some suspictions as to the hbv, but just assumed  that it was not leaking so cant be that. I have also noticed that the fan does not appear as loud when the fan runs for a few mins after the engine has been switched off, so poss not switching to full speed, SO COULD THAT BE ONE OF THE FAN SWITCHES. I will check the fuses tomorrow when i get back from work in daylight.Will keep you all informed folks.

Ps brucie did you get the valve ok.?

Ok, i have checked the 30amp fuses in the relay box and they are ok, so i will check the fans using the test procedure, and see if the fan does run at both speeds. I have not ruled out that the temp sender is fuberd and i will change that before i go looking at the heater bypass valve. Cost is not a factor here but i do want to check things in a orderd  manor as i want to cure this LITTLE prob once and for all. Watch this space as they say!!!! ;)

If the fans aren't behaving it's also worth checking the relays in the engine bay fuse box. There are 4 or 5 relays here associated with the fans.

Does the engine temperature stabilise and behave itself when you've got the air conditioning on?

The auxiliary fans will run full time with air-con so this would take the engine fan out of the equation.

When i went to the lakes meet kevin i pulled a trailer tent , and got caught in some heavy traffic on the m6, the temp did climb and i put the air con on and the temp fell rapidly then, but now you mention it i did the same thing sat and the effect was not the same so will check that as well. :y
