Hi Folks,

I've got a 52-plate ex-police MV6.

It currently has a small stubby aerial at the back of the roof, and I want to change this for  beesting aerial.

My question is - how do I go about getting the headlining down a bit at the back so I can get at the fittings that hold the small aerial in place?

personally when headlining comes off ( albeit in full) its hard to get back on.

I`d expect that its tucked in under the trim above windows with some connectors along it....

Anyone got anything more specific?

Agree with you there Markie - I attempted this change of aerial when I first got mine. It caused me so much hassle trying to get at the underside of the existing aerial I gave up and left it as it was.  Although am quite happy at thefact I never changed it now.  Sorry can't be of any help but thought I'd share my experience.

Thanks for that folks - much appreciated.  I did manage to get to the back of the aerial earlier though, by gently pulling back the panel that holds the high-level brake light.  Then you can pull the headlining down a bit to get access.

But this leads me to my next question...

The reason why I wanted to change the aerial was because the radio reception was poor.  I have now found the reason for this - the aerial that the car has been fitted with is an after-market one which is at the back of the glove box.

When I've looked at the back of the head unit, there is no other aerial lead (other than the s***e after-market job).

Any ideas where I would find the original aerial???

On my elite the stubby aerial is for the telephone (CRT700) and the radio aerial is .. I believe... part of the heated rear windscreen ...


but I'm probably wrong ...

Yep. The heated rear window on saloons is used as the radio aerial. There should be a coaxial aerial cable running from the head unit down the driver's side sill panel to a box on the rear parcel shelf which is a preamplifier and splits the radio signal from the heater rear window power supply.

The aerial connector on the rear of the radio frame is known to come loose, giving a rubbish signal.

Ahh, now this is starting to make a bit more sense now...!

Whereabouts on the rear parcel shelf should the preamp be?  A rough location, and description of what to look for, would be great as I'm not sure if Plod would have ripped it out?

It's under the trim panel but above the metal panel. I'm guessing the trim panel needs to cone out of the interior of the car to get at it.

Possibly, but it might not have been originally supplied with cabling and ancillaries due to lack of headunit. Best of luck getting it sorted, I hate having no radio

If you remove the driver's side kick panel (behind the bonnet release) there should be a connector in the aerial cable here. Could be that it's just the bit from here to the head unit that's missing.

How o you get the drivers side kick panel off?  (I don't want to start ripping panels out gung-ho!   )

As a first question.

When you look at the ehated rear window elements painted onto the glass......is there two vertical lines that are part of the element about ¹/₄ of the way in from either side.....?

Yep, there is indeed 2 vertical lines - is that a good thing or a bad thing?!  :-/

Thats good, those lines are the matching strips to support radio receptiona dn obviously the rear window would be the hardest thing to fit.

I suspect you will also find the aerial booster setup under the rear shelf cover to so you would only need a lead to connect it to the radio head unit and thats assuming it doesnt already run to the passnger side foot well (which is where it normaly hides)
