Please can someone confirm - are "V" rated tyres legally OK to be used on the 2000 W 2.5V6?

Absolutely, and I don't make a habit of driving at that speed.. so I'm a bit peeved the tyre centre won't fit the V rated tyres I want at £50 each! Instead, they want to charge me £111 a corner for W rated Avons....

If I recall correctly, its to do with the potential max speed of the car, not simply what you can or would drive it at and to fit inferior rated tyres is naughty as a result.....

I thought it was just the3.0/3.2 cars that required Z/W rated tyres

Oh, I wouldn't fit inferior tyres, and no way would I compromise safety. I will go with what the manufacturer recommends.

However, it's very strange that this same tyre place, fitted H rated tyres to my previous 2.5 V6 Omega !!!

Lies, Damn Lies and Speed ratings.
All tyres are rated with a speed letter. This indicates the maximum speed that the tyre can sustain for a ten minute endurance without coming to pieces and destroying itself, your car, the car next to you and anyone else within a suitable radius at the time.

'H' rated tyres are becoming the most commonplace and widely used tyres, replacing 'S' and 'T' ratings. Percentage-wise, the current split is something like this: S/T=67%, H=23%, V=8%. Certain performance cars come with 'V' or 'Z' rated tyres as standard. This is good because it matches the performance capability of the car, but bad because you need to re-mortgage your house to buy a new set of tyres.

I didn't mention make of tyre - by manufacturers recommendations - I mean the car manufacturers recommendations - EG Vauxhall..  :-/

You also have to check what manufacturer states, not just what car can do.

For eg, the little Rover is mnaufacturer stated to have V, even though the manufacturer's own data show it to be about 10mph below the H rating....

Can't see the 2.5 getting to 149 MPH, even in manual form. I'd say the V rated tyres will be fine.

Hi James, I am almost certain that the Omega handbook states V rated tyres as standard, can check in the morning for you if you want.

The handbook for my '99 2.5 V6 states 'V' rated tyres.
