Vibrations are now driving me nuts
« on: 14 October 2007, 15:02:27 »

At 80mph, I'm getting a terrible vibration. I've just spent a good hour at quick fit, all wheels balanced at multiple speeds using the 5-stud method.

Test run up the dual carriageway - problem is still exactly the same.

What else will cause these vibrations, felt through the whole of the car, apart from wheel balancing?

Buckle on the rim, creating a high spot on the tyre as its now out of round.  Balance weights will balance it within reason but its like driving on an egg shaped tyre....

I followed your suggestion, swap the spare (which I also have had balanced!) on each corner, it's not made any difference :(

Question - would imbalanced wheels on the rear of the car, cause vibration to be felt through the steering wheel?

i too would go with the rubber doughnut at the g/box end of the propshaft. these do fail often. check all universal joints as well. :y

Best way to check? What's acceptable and not acceptable movement?

The rubber coupling just goes soft but there should be no play or movment in the universal joints.  hth.

Also james, check that the balance weight has not come off the shaft. You will see were it was stuck on if it is missing. :y

Hello James, I noticed you followed my "wheel Balance" problem, you are also very knowledgeable re Omega's, so I imagine the wheels/tyres were checked for "running true", balancing vibration is speed or revolution sensitive, O to 50 ok 50/55 mph problem, 60 to 75 ok then problem again at 75/80 then again 90ish and so on.
While sorting my car I checked most things, centre propshaft mounting/propshaft balance came into question, to check as a first of, who much vibration can be felt through the gear selector, this can be a tell/tail, worth a check, good luck
best regards

In my experience, propshaft balance tends to make itself known from lower speeds than wheel balance. Wheel balance is rarely a problem under 50/60 MPH but a propshaft out of balance will tend to start from 30/40 MPH due to the faster speed of rotation.Just an observation I've made in the past.

I take it the tyres were checked for bulges?

Does braking have an effect on the vibration?
