Thinking of buying
« on: 06 October 2007, 12:41:01 »

Hi Guys,

New member, please be gentle!

I'm thinking about buying a T-reg Omega CDX 2.5 Auto Estate. It's got 72500 on the clock and seems to be in excellent nick apart from some rust on both rear wheel arches, which looks pretty well established. Anyone had a similar problem and how easy (and expensive) was it to sort? I haven't driven it yet as the drive was blocked. It belonged to the (now dead) stepfather of a friend of mine and has had all of it's services etc. I know she wouldn't rip me off and is only selling it to sort out his estate. She's asking £1100 (which I know is a bargain).

Also, does anyone know if it's possible to hook up an ipod into a CCRT700 stereo without using one of those horrible cassette player adaptors or annoying radio transmitter thingies?

Hope someone can help. :y

I know very little about rust treatment, but beforehand, i'd definately give it a test drive before deciding its worth whatever price

Absolutely, wouldn't dream of buying it without a good test drive, including Duals, A&B roads and speed bumps. It just wasn't practical at the time. There's no real rush from her perspective as it's parked on a good friends (large) drive and money isn't a massive issue. I need to make sure I can get away with driving such a large car with an auto box(currently in an R-plate 8v 1.6 Astra.)

Hi, and welcome to the site. It will be as well to check all the toys out, electric windows, sunroof, cruise control, climate control, both hot and cold. Pull a plug lead off and check for oil on it, usually a sign that the cam cover gaskets need replacing.

A development. She's had a look at Glass's Guide and said, if I want it, I can have it for trade in+MOT cost. So £800, then.

Test drive on Sunday and I'll let you know how it works out.

Anyone know what the deal is with private plates? There's one on it at the moment and I don't particularly want it. Could I sell it on and revert back to the original reg. number or does it stay with the purchaser of the registration (or in this case, his estate)?

No, sorry.  The wired FM modulator is probably best option.

the plate will hold a bit of value, if the seller has agreed to sell the car with the private reg, once the car is registered in your name you should be able to put the plate on retention, and then sell it. DVLA will have more info i think

I was offered £600 for mine, not selling :D

Well, finally viewed in daylight and took it out for a drive. Very smooth, excellent gear changes. There are a few J Lo. sized but(t)s, namely:
It was very slow off the mark (I know it's a heavy car, but a 2.5 V6 should be quicker imho).
It pulls to the left (could be as simple as tyre pressures or tracking) and constantly had to correct.
There is a bit of rust in the bottom rear corner of both rear doors, the rear wheel arches are starting to blister and there has been amateurish attempt at repairing the paintwork just below the window on the tailgate.
Finally, and most worryingly, the front passenger door is very temperamental (sometimes it unlocks, sometimes it doesn't and it won't lock without the button being manually operated).

Time to ponder. Am I being too picky, after all, it is pretty cheap?

Nothing there that's too frightening.  The rusty bits I'm afraid go with the territory - any Omega that age is likely to be similar.
Slow off the mark - are you used to the Omega - it is a big lump to get moving.. maybe worth finding another to compare with?
pulling - likely tracking/wishbones - easily solvable
door lock - also fairly common - squirt of wd40 may solve it or a trip to the breakers.

Given the price it doesn't sound too bad to be honest.   If you want more peace of mind maybe you could agree with her to take it for an mot?
