Exhaust in 2 halves
« on: 14 October 2007, 13:21:02 »

I just pulled up outside work, standing outside the car I thought - this exhaust sounds a bif "fruity" !   ::)

Looked under the car, and the mid-section pipe has completely corroded away where it joins the backbox - basically it's not even meeting the backbox, and the pipe is just wiggling free, fumes from the passenger bank are not even going through the rear silencer.

Question 1 - is this likely to be affecting the running / performance / economy of the car in any way at all?

Question 2 - Exhaust options. Am I right in thinking facelift exhaust is different to pre-facelift, and they are not interchangable?

Not really much help but I know the 3.2 is different as it has a different CAT setup.

I would have thought the Backboxes are all pretty similar, 3.2 has twin tailpipes but it's more cosmetic than anything else!

Oh and any holes in the exhaust will alter the back pressure which will alter performance and economy.

Hi James. I guess the detatchment of the pipe from the back box would be likely to affect performance to some degree. A few weeks ago all the wadding started blowing out of mine. Every time I went somewhere it looked like I had just run over a blonde, with the stuff trailing behind. I have noticed a decrease in performance and mpg but not to a serious degree. Not too familiar with the joint at the backbox. Is it a flange on a stub? Has the flange corroded on the centre section? This may mean a replacement centre section as well as the backbox.

Obviously that's plus delivery, plus DIY fitting, but it could be worse!

Suspect I will be persuaded to splash out on genuine GM parts though...  ::)

There is no question of that - fitting I will do.

However, I think the parts may still need to be from GM.

Example one....

Cheap(ish) after market exhaust fitted to an Omega saloon at a octs of over 250 quid.

Less than two years later all the inetrnal baffles have collapsd and its sounds awful.

Example two...

Gm exhaust fitted three yers ago at a cost of under 250 quid.

3 years on and its still in excellent condition.

Its a no brainer.

Don't. Its a nice car. Don't ruin it just to save a few quid (which it won't). You have TC, use it!
