rev counter & petrol gauge

HI
new to the forum.
hoing someone can help me. have a 2.0 gls 1996 which i love.
recently the rev counter and petrol gauge started not working intermittently (but together) and have now both packed up altogether.
Whats the link between these 2 gauges ?
Any ideas ?

Check the dash is fully seated - the connector is behind tacho, so gently, but firmly, press there...

Had a Range Rover that did that a few years ago, turned out to be the Alternator.... maybe worth a look :y

tried the dash but it wouldn't really budge at all. it sfairly solid.
