smoke from driver's side of engine
« on: 20 October 2007, 10:26:33 »

When my 1999 2.5 V6 petrol has been running for a while I am getting a lot of smoke (that smells like burning oil) coming from the driver's side of the engine compartment, somewhere near the bulkhead. There are too many pipes to see exactly where the smoke is coming from. I am also leaving an oil patch when parked up. Could anyone suggest an obvious source and solution?

Don't know if it's related, but the tickover used to be rock solid at 500rpm. Recently it's started dropping below 500 and immediately the engine revs pick up to about 800rpm, then it drops back to 500. It does this every 20 secs or so - just like I'm blipping the throttle.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Steve
It sounds like the Cam cover gasket has gone, not a bad job but you might want to clean the breathers as well which is probably the reason for the gasket going. If you pull the plug leads out on that side you will probably find the ends covered in oil.

AArrgghh! I had that job done when I bought the car in Jan 07 - is it likely to have happened again so soon? Also the smoke appears to be kinda 'puffing up' (like it's coming from a pipe / hole) from somewhere low down on the drivers side, where I can't see clearly. Would that suggest something else possibly?

I dont know where you had the job done but if they've not used genuine Vauxhall gaskets and clened the breathers then its possible for them to go again. The puffing could be the oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold.

If they've been done properly using Vauxhall gaskets and the breathers have been cleaned and are kept clean and the oil is changed regularly then you should'nt have a proplem :y

got my car done today for £15!
i bought all the Castrol 10w/40 Magnatec Oil and Bosch Oil Filter for my local mechanic, and he done it for me
anyway, his mate was there and while i was there offered me £1850 cash for my car!
its an October 1998 S Registration, Vauxhall Omega 2.5 V6 CDX Estate, done approx 62000 Miles
after the rocker gaskets "saga" im tempted !!!
it seems this is a common problem due to a "poor design" by Vauxhall!
have been looking at buying an 02 - 03 Merc or Lexus for no more than £7500 (thats my budget)
im weighing up the Pros and cons of buying a more reliable vehicle!
looking at a 2.5 - 3.0 litre with ALL the gadgets etc
i have never been a BOY racer, but always wanted a car thats QUIET to drive and has all the toys
my omega was it, but after spending £765+......   am i just throwing money away?

As I said before, if you don't service it yourself, for a 98 car, paying dealer prices is never worthwhile

well then, as i said earlier, im NOT a mechanic, and these days who the hell does ALL their serving on their cars?
(apart fom people who have been working with cars for years?)

my stepfather works at BMW in Cowley in Oxford, he said he MAY try and get me a company BMW for £250 a month, not sure what the Spec is, but all i know is that i get a NEW car every 9 months on their scheme, sounds like the best option for me (possibly)

Each to their own... we just try and promote the fact it's not always as complicated as the dealer makes out...
