Is it the leak off pipes?
« on: 31 August 2007, 21:13:14 »

Hi all,

I have my 2002 CD dti for 4 weeks now and love it.  However i have a question, I have looked through the posts and I think that I know what the problem may be, but I do not have knowledge of you guys so looking for confirmation or other things to check! :)

Problem: If i have not started the car in 12 hours it is a bit difficult to start, turns over fine and then splutters into life after about 3-4 seconds (other diesels I have owned always started instantly?). The EML light stays on for about 8-10 seconds and then goes out. no more problems or lights until next period of inactivity.

If the car is not started for a number of days, then there is a need for continual turning over in bursts of 5-8 seconds and then eventually it will attempt to start and then will start after about 6-7 attempts (EML light again and then goes out). From what I have read, it is a fuel problem, air in system, faulty pump/s or the leak off pipes.

Thoughts or advice guys?

PS: Do not have a cheapo (yet)

Hiya mate, I have the same problem with a car that I am repairing and yes it is the bleed off pipes, they will need renewing to solve the problem. If this works please let us know as of yet the guy that I am repairing the car for hasn't got the parts I need to sort the car out.

Cheers Paul :y

Had my glow-plugs replaced last January mine wouldn't start at all one very cold morning. It was ok when warmed up, but as soon as the engine went cold, wouldn't start. It would start with a squirt of "easy start" down the intake from cold although not recommended, only for emergencies. Garage said only 2/3 plugs were working. Not bad I think these were the original plugs that lasted 98000 miles, what mileage have you done?

Well bleed off pipes changed, new glow plugs and new fuel filter with new seal and still the same problem.  We have had the car up on a lift and looked everywhere for any signs of a leak without sucess.  What's next to check?   :-/
