Good afternoon peeps,

Just had the dreaded phone call from my local (cheap) MOT man. Car has failed  


Excessive corrosion of front to rear brake line - Is this a big job to do? just a case of getting some copper pipe and flaring? 1 single pipe all the way?

Excessive corrosion O/S brake line t-Piece (?) - I would have thought the t-piece would go on the above pipe and divide the lines to the N/S and O/S ??

Low light output O/S headlight - Glazed front, I already have a new one (Thanks Markey Mark)

Anyone who knows about the brake pipe situation, I would be very grateful of any advice!

Not sure about the front to back line.  I wouldn't have thought too difficult.

The T piece is in the middle at the back.  Wouldn't have thought it would corrode though.  Could he mean theat the OS line has corroded at the T piece end?   Those lines (2 on each side) at the back are pretty straightforward.

I wouldn't say that was too bad for a '96 car

Either make yourself if you have the kit or find a good car spares shop who can make them for you
Just measure the pipe with a piece of string and make a note of which fittings you require on each end and away you go.

I just took the old one to the accesory shop and they made a new one to the exact length spot on.  I had to bend it though which was an interesting exercise.  Cost a fiver for the pipe and 2 fittings.

I sympathise as my Mega failed its MOT last week too for dim headlights and handbrake too high (even though it still works). So I spent a fun weekend completely stripping down the handbrake and adjusting thanks to the excellent HowTo by MDTM on here. Boy, they were rusted pretty solid. Now just got my replacement headlights I ordered to install. Will look much nicer too.

Re. brake lines, last year I had an advisory and the garage wirebrushed them and spayed with Tectel. Sounds like its a bit late for you though. Prevention is always best but is not something that's visible.

OK, I think I can get hold of a flaring kit and a couple of uniouns for that, still not sure about the t-piece bit though, I haven't seen the car yet but am struggling to see how there is more than one t piece - which is what he implied.

I would tend to agree with ians saying that there is one in the centre... but what do you mean saying there are 2 on each side??

there are two separate pieces of pipe on each side at the rear.  only one t piece.

I see. Makes a bit more sense now, I guess I can just use any old T-piece cos I may as well replace that as well. I shall have a look and put some pics on - see how bad they are.

no worries about the head light buddy !! there shouldnt be any tee piece at the back the abs system is a four line set up therefore one line per wheel !! just a set of brake pipes on an estate i am selling and they are a right pain to do the front to rear ones but doable bud !!

Great... twice as much copper pipe then! Never mind, will have a look this week and see.

ABS was 3 way on early cars so there might be only one pipe to rear?
