What on earth did this wire do?!!
« on: 25 October 2007, 15:05:07 »

I have accidently found a black wire cut and neatly tucked away out of sight.

It is about 2 mm thick and disappears into the engine just in front of the Top hose engine end inlet- sort of between that pipe and the cam cover. The next thing near it is the upside down U shaped half inch cooling pipework. I have tried pulling it gently and there is something on the end of it that clunks!

I wonder if this is the something that is adversely affecting the performance of the car?

as ever ideas would be appreciated.

At least I now know how to add a picture.  I can add a couple more if this is too small/unclear.

Hope this helps someone to identify what the wire might be!
Any advice will be brilliant.....

(Any help in undoing that bxxxxy plug on the ecu unit would also be wonderful.  Now stuck and its getting dark......)

OMIGOD!!
I dunno about anyone else but I can't see the picture on my PC!
It did work in the Test Zone, so if you can't see it in here, perhaps you could have a look there and stop me from going MAAAAAD

pic can be added like this:

Code: [Select]
which gives

... or use the "img" shortcut that I think photobucket gives you (will be in that format), then copy & paste  :y

... although I still don't recognise what's in the pic  :-?

... is it definitely a wire and not one of the small plastic vacuum pipes?

No it is definitely a wire. To the left of my grubby, tired fingers is the cam cover, to the left in front is the top hose water inlet pipe. Directly under my tired grubby fingers is the negative main battery lead. The strange object in front is the ABS ECU. I still haven't figured out how to unplug (as haynes so succintly puts it) the wiring plug.

Any suggestions on wire or how to unplug??

I can't see this clearly in the picture, but generally speaking cut wire is what is left in the engine following a crank sensor replacement, the new unit comes with it's own wire and what the garages do is rather then remove the old wire completely they just cut both ends of it leaving the middle bit in.

ECU plug is a bit tricky

I used a screwdriver to prise the tab out, be very careful as if you break the tab off it becomes very difficult  :(

The plug will disengage as you extend the pink tab inthe direction of the nearside wheel

 :-[ Sorry for dodgey photos

If the wire is at the front - there is a choice of cam sensor and knock sensor

You could well be right with that Mr Imber.

When we first had the car one of the things the garage 7 years ago "looked "at was a knock sensor. In those days I was too busy and far too trusting to investigate what was actually done.

For a while now I have been saying that the engine performance is poor and it sounds as though it is knocking.

Question is now what can I do about it? I have done two paperclip tests in the last six months with no codes present. Is there a way of testing for either cam or knock sensor? Is it best left till I have the cam belt etc done next?

By the way the replacement  ABS ECU is back on, car should be running by this time next week on current meteoric progress!
