Manual gearbox oil
« on: 07 November 2007, 09:53:33 »

Had the gearbox out a few months ago to replace rear crank oil seal, filled gearbox with hypoid ep90 gear oil, all has been ok until the cold spell we are having now, gear change awful. Took the excellent advice found on this forum and put the correct oil in, Vauxhall transmission oil £12.50 a litre, 1.2 litres needed. Expensive job but well worth it, lovely gear change now, even when cold.
Help needed - Y reg 2.6 ELITE auto - display is reading " LOW VISION   FL/D VISION " intermittently, any ideas, theres nothing in the handbook. Suggestions appreciated.

That was lucky.....the manaul box uses a sapecial synthetic oil....not hypoid.

Low vision message relates to the auto leveing system for the HID head lights.

This can be due to a few things.

1) A sensor fault (located on the front passenger side wishbone or rear passenger side trailing arm)
2) A failed leveling motor (not so common)

So first thing to do is check the sensors for damage.

The stuff I was given for mine only cost that for 3 litres. Do you have the part No I need to check to see if I was given the wrong stuff.

Got it from Bristol Street Motors, Newcastle, we are in the trade club.
Part number 9196089 transmission oil,  £12.60 each per litre retail, £10.71 trade +vat.
Normal oil colour, not red.

The oil for the gearbox should be red in colour!

The oil that came out was red and the replacement oil that the dealer gave me was red.

In a mild state of panic I rang Bristol Street again, gave them Reg.No, VIN etc.( AGAIN ) They confirm that this is the correct stuff, I have just looked at the 800ml I have left and it is almost clear in colour, not even brown like normal oil. Apparently the part number I gave is a new one and has been superceded many times. Could be a newer version of the red stuff. Bottle clearly states Transmission Oil. Comments appreciated.

The correct part number is: 9120541 - Early and 93165290 Late....the later stuff can be used to replace the early stuff following a flush.

9196089 (75-90) is for Agila gearboxes only according to my information......and its bloody thick stuff!

The stuff I have is like water, a bit like the 0w30 long life engine oils, it is definitely not thick oil, just the opposite. I am going to ring another Vauxhall dealer to cross reference. More to follow.

I checked EPC myself and then phoned my friendly local dealer and we came up with the above.

Thanks Mark, you are spot on with the Agila bit. Both Sherwoods and Bristol Street have confirmed that this is the oil they would use, it is fully synthetic and has replaced the red stuff. Apparently the gear oil for the new antaras and astras is green!!! Bristol Street have a massive area to cover and they only got this part number a few weeks ago, it might filter through to other dealers as they re-order from the factory or supplier. It came with a sheet in about 12 languages stuck to the bottle. It ran into the box very quickly and is definitely not thick and syrupy. Here's hoping. If you see a wanted ad for a manual box from me, it was the wrong stuff!!!!

Thanks for the replies. Mark - what is an EPC? I may have lost the plot here a bit but do you agree that this is the new and correct oil? If it isn't I am parking the car up and heading for the pub.
