omega v6 rattling noise
« on: 08 November 2007, 17:50:51 »

Hi
I my friend has an omega 1999 v reg 2.5 v6 engine which  he just bought and noticed when the engine is cold it works perfect but when the engine warms up after a short drive the oil pressure light comes on and goes off when he accelerates but noticed as well a rattling noise coming from somewhere  underneath the valve covers could it be lack of oil or the oil pump is not supplying enough oil to the engine when its cold like I said it does not do it any help please.

Sounds like oil pressure is low and causing the hydraulic tappets to complain. Oil is thicker when cold and thus less flow is required to maintain a healthy pressure in the system. Check the oil level first, and if it's not that it could be a pressure relief valve or faulty oil pump, blocked sump pickup or a more serious engine problem such as a duff bearing causing lack of oil pressure. If the engine doesn't make any other nasty noises it's probably not the latter though.

Oh, and just to say, as a damage limitation measure, don't drive it or run it for any longer than necessary until it's fixed :y

Just to add to Kev's good advice -

If the level looks OK, change the oil, for 10/40 semi synthetic. I once bought a project Omega that had been run on 20/50 oil, and some of the noises it made were not good! Flushing and replacing with semi synth sorted it immediately.
