why is it that vx say the level must be checked with the engine at operating temperature and a wait of about 5 mins as if you do an oil change and follow this procedure, when you go to check oil next day on a cold engine chances are the level will be above the max. Myself I always tended to fill to max on a cold engine, never had any issues that way! what do you guys think?

TBH mate i have always heard that if you wait 20 - 30 mins before checking your oil the level should be there abouts.... hope this helps

Oil expands slightly with temp.  Also, takes 5 - 10 mins for the oil to drain back to sump after a run

Ah , so if topped up to the max' mark when engine at operating Temp' and checked after 5-10 mins this would mean that when checked again in the morning on  a cold engine then the reading on dipstick would be slightly over the Max' then

Yup .. as VX have, apparently, set the marks on the dipstick for a warm system that has recently run. If they had intended the system to be checked cold the marks would be in a different place !!!

I personally think it's hair splitting, I always check level from cold, before the car is started.

I have always checked my oil level with the engine hot, after a 10min wait and never had any issues with that .

The important point, i think......wether hot or cold (ie started and stopped pretty quick) is to leave the engine 5-10mins to let the oil drain back into the sump....then check the level
