Paperclip test results - help pls
« on: 13 November 2007, 17:25:47 »

Went out in the car today and the EML light came on and stayed on when I started the car.

Revved OK but very little drive in D. No Sport mode. Gearbox came up on the MID display. Switched off had a look under the bonnet. Nothing obvious so turned it back on and EML light came on and went off as normal. No Gearbox on display. Car drove fine to civilisation and back.

Later flashed out  codes with engine running as follows:

74

22

I have the thrust washer problem on the gearbox so am intending changing that in due course. I cleaned my ICV out yesterday and also checked the little brass breather pipe and the big one that comes out of the crankcase (both were fine incidentally) I also had a look around for any wires chafing or leaking vacuum tubes etc in my never ending quest for the lack of power problem!!

Anyone know what the codes mean please?

Any thoughts?

Additionally, might be worth clearing them, and seeing if they return..

Check the Throttle position sensor connector and wiring, this also has an affect on the auto box.

Of course, TPS will cause box to limp if there's a bad connection.

Varche, did you actually remove the g/box sump and see the thrust washer remains?

James  - sadly yes I have got the remains of the thrust washer. I recently did an autobox oil change and took both pans off. There it was in bits in the front pan much to my dismay but expectation.

Both - yesterday I jiggled the TPS connector but it seemed firm enough and the latch was engaged. Maybe I should have had the battery disconnected first?

How do I clear the codes?

You will need at minimum a cheapo Tech2 to clear codes. You could start buzzing wires through, back to the ECU, but I would start with clearing codes and see what returns, if the EML is not on?

Disconnected battery, took the TPS off this morning. Double checked the wiring. No obvious problems. Put back together and started up everything worked fine.

Regarding clearing codes. I thought these went when the battery was disconnected but mine are still there after disconnecting the battery this morning!. Last year I had some codes when I had the misfire and these dissappeared. Do you really need a tech2 to clear them?
