timing belt or timing belt kit.. advice needed
« on: 16 November 2007, 07:58:29 »

Hi all.
my 2003 opel omega has done 136000km (84 000 miles). andi think its time to change timint belt. i'm planing to do it my self but i have some quistion that need answering.

1- by changing the timing belt shall i change the pulleys and tensioner (whole kit) or just the rubber band would be enough. as well is there a way to test pulleys to see if they are any good.

2- other brand eg : gates, HQ, DAYCO,and Cloyes, are they trust worthy.

3- the locking kit is it a must or the job can be done with out it.

thanks everyone in this really helpful forum

1) Always the whole kit, without compromise. Change the waterpump too, and if needsbe, the auxiliary belt.

2) Most of the kits will have SKF bearings anyway, which are supplied to Vauxhall. I prefer to use genuine GM, but that's just me :)

3) Locking kit is needed, you cannot get it right without.

I believe Gates and Contitech are fine and are more likely to have the timing marks on the belts.

Do full kit.

On GM V6 you do need the timing/locking kit, no exceptions.

I learned a long time ago always to fit manufacturers parts in crucial maintenance, and I class timing belt as one of those, bearing in mind what could happen if a fault occurs, at least you have warranty on parts and if proved faulty possibly repair of car. I always keep record of date of fitting and mileage, and receipts, I wouldn`t trust any others no matter what the savings. Wouldn`t leave it so long next time 40,000 miles recomended by Vauxhall, and always fit whole kit.

Guys,

What's the going rate for a timing belt kit for a 2.0ltr and which to buy?  Ebay or Main Dealer or Patent Part?  Also, as I'm past the 80k, I'll be changing the water pump also.  Again, same questions for that.

Oh, and do I need a cam locking kit of some sort or can they be held in place by sockets or something?

Lastly, how difficult and how long a job is it?

Many Thanks!

Every 40k change the full kit. £70 + VAT from dealer if you have a Trade Club card.  Water pump needs doing as well.

A cheap lock is handy to hold cams in place, usually less than £5, so worth buying just to make it easier.

If its the first one you've done, probably about 3hrs.  If you've done one before, about an hour.
