My Engine Cuts Out as well
« on: 25 November 2007, 12:59:07 »

hi guys first time here i am having the same trouble aswell, i bought a new battery and alternater for it a few months back and it worked fine but i noticed it wasnt charging in low revs like under 2500rpm but i t didnt bother me. but now with winter here the heating is on etc i rarely go over 2500 rpm to charge the battery as its an automatic. the engine cuts out and and i have to keep my foot on the accelarator at all times to stop it from cutting out on most days. i brought it back to the garage and he tested the battery and the alternator and he said they are fine but when the the last alternator packed in it also blows the battery bulb in the dashboard and he said this controls the charging in lows revs so needs to be replaced.
i was hoping if this is true guys and not some major other problem.

Most alternators rely on the current through the charge bulb to self-excite on startup so if the bulb has blown you should fix it.

Is the engine cutting due to low battery volts or another problem?

Another frequent cause of charging woes is the positive battery terminal. The wire to the alternator and starter can get loose in the crimp connection and the extra resistance causes inadequate charging. Check that the battery terminal doesn't get hot when running.

It'd also be worth measuring the battery voltage when running at a fast idle with and without a load of electrical accessoriues turned on.

As stated, clean the battery terminals and ensure good clean earth/ground....
