You seem to have several defects here, maybe related, maybe not.

First off, do your grinding noises appear when you turn your
blower on (you said the blower is working), or are you hearing
a grinding noise all the time?

For the coolant smell.
Are you losing coolant?
Is the level in your header tank dropping?
Are your carpets wet underneath them?

For the heating.
Do you have Climate Control, or the standard system like the rest of us
in the cheap seats?   :)
If climate, try a reset.

Is the pipe getting hot that leads into your cabin from the engine bay?
If not, then we're looking at an HBV fault, or a vacuum system fault to
the HBV.

Hi,
possibly you also have problem with heater matrix. As Grumpy sad first check coolant level..

In the beginning there will not be traces on carpets (mine also didnt have) but if you continue to use you will see increased amount of loss in coolant.

And one day you will see the carpets become wet.  Long job..Dont try changing the matrix without complete removal of dash otherwise you will break some hidden screws which will cause noise after...Just behind the dash is a long plastic pipe..Under is screws hidden..

Did you changed Heater By Pass valve  (HBV) .. this also can cause problems..Causing loss of coolant ..

i am losing collant slowly,

Seeing as you are losing coolant, and getting no heat into
the cabin, check out your HBV for leaks and correct operation.
The following link, by PeteG, will show you where it is and how to replace
it, if required.

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1193594464

Check operation with air con on and off. Check for leaks and that
hot coolant is flowing to the cabin by feeling if the pipe to the cabin
is getting hot.

the grinding noise only happens when the heater is on,

I'll assume you mean that when your blower fan is on.
This will be either:
Failed Blower Motor bearings.
Broken bit of the fan or housing rubbing together.
Foreign object found its way into the Blower.

You'll need to remove the glovebox to get to the blower motor
behind your fascia.

You didn't reply to if you had Climate Control.
If you have, did you try a reset?

Open bonnet, lift up flap by pollen filter - any water in there?

Also remove filter, make sure keys are out and look for stuff against the fan.
