Climate Noise - driving me crazy!
« on: 23 November 2007, 16:27:24 »

Hiya guys, I have an intermittent noise coming from my climate control - having just pulled it apart to sort another problem (illumination) I thought I would find the problem. Turns out it is the little fan that sits inside the climate panel, mounted to the PCB (see pic) that is making a buzzing sound when it rotates

Is this just to circulate air through the sensor in front of it for climate feedback? What will happen if I take it out and leave it out??

Is this a cheap part to buy, or shall i just look for a second hand climate panel?

Any help would be much appreciated as I don't fancy no heating and I don't wasn't that noise any more!

As you rightly say, fan is the sampling fan for the climate control.  Without the fan operating the CC does not do its job properly.

By 'buzzing' is it touching anything as it rotates, similar to the playing card in the bike spokes thing that kids do on their bikes?  I think its an integral part of the climate panel and requires a complete swap out, but I also know that Marks_DTM has (or is in the process of) replaced the fan with one off a PC chip cooler or similar....  May be worth some investigation?

I found the buzzing unusual when I first got the car but don't notice it now - just another special feature of the Omega. I thought all the omega climates were like this.

Platty - if you manage to sort out your illumination, and the fan is removable somehow, you are welcome to the one from my old climate panel as my fan worked ok.

I work in Newmarket, so am local to you.

Thanks for your reply guys - lifted the fan off on Friday and went the weekend without it in there... caused havoc with the c/c as hotel21 said it would!!

The fan spins silently when I have the climate panel out and am fiddling with it, but when I reassemble it - the noise will starts up again.

There is nothing catching in the fan, it seems to come from the rotating area on the underside of the fan - it is very annoying as I cannot find the exact cause!!

V6_MAT - If you have another fan I could try that would be great!

hi sometimes pc fans have the same problem, on my raq server it was silent when out but noisy when in, this is due to it vibrating while the casing of it is fixed, when out of the unit the whole thing can vibrate and it dont cause so much hassle.
to solve problem i would be inclined to use a small packing washer, possibly a rubber type, or the little washer that you get for the spacers on a pc motherboard may suffice. another thing that is pretty common on the pa amps that we service, as when the fan is done up too tight, which causes it to warp slightly.

give these things a try, may not work for you but there are soem options  :y

cheers

never had experience with one of these, but here's my thoughts... if you take the fan out, is it just the blades part or the motor it rotates on aswell? if so, can you rotate it by hand while you're holding it and feel if it's catching on anything?

Ah yes, the climate fans.....

There a simple brush-less motor with the drive electronics on the main climate PCB, the electronics fail (although they would appear to be OK in this case). In fact, it could be that they are failing and once there is some air resistance the fan does not rotate evenly.

On mine, I removed the fan completely and fitted a 12V (9-15V actually) 25mm standard fan which I screwed to the main rear plastic molding and wires the supply leads into the main PCB.

It sorted my climate issues very nicely....it is fractionally noisier than a good standard fan but, its only one when the climate is on so the blower motor is running at which point its not audible.

V6_MAT you have PM.

I have tried a washer underneath it to try and settle it down, but this has not worked and makes even more noise - hopefully can get my hands on another fan to try out.

Thanks for all your input guys!!
