Autobox oil level.

Hi, can I just clear up the method of checking my auto box level.

I’m I right in saying there is not a 'dipstick' and its checked from underneath direct from the pan?

Any ideas of the change intervals for it?

Sorry for all the questions, my handbook didn’t come with the car but its being posted, i'm just wanting to check the basics.

You leave the car running on a flat surface then undo the 'fill bolt' if fluid runs out, it's go enough in. If not top up till it does.
Whats the millage?
When was the last time it had its fluid and filter changed?

Hi kris

143k miles with next to no history, im checking and doing it all basicly, I was just a bit confused as im used to seeing antother dipsick for the auto box. I saw a small trace of oil from between the engine and box so wanted to check it.

Vx recommend changing the gearbox oil every 6 years/60K miles.
A total fill with a dry convertor and box is 8.4 ltrs. But you will need less than that.
To check the level DTM has put a guide on page 4 of the maintenance guide section.

Unsure, its been wiped and will be monitored. Plus side, it wasn’t bright red nor did it smell like atf, time will tell, I will recheck and get a better idea in a couple hundred miles.

If you have ATF between the engine and box thats probably the neck seal in the gearbox - thats a box off job :( the seal itself only costs about £4. It's just a PITA taking the box off to fit it.

If it's engine oil though, that will be your cam cover gaskets...

Oh cam cover gaskets... haven’t heard that mentioned before  ;D


I couldn't see any leaks when I checked whilst doing the cam belt, but as I said its on the 'monitor' list.
