Rear shocks
« on: 28 November 2007, 18:38:37 »

Hi, Im going though my 'to do list' (cambelt, rear dics and pads) and next is the rear shock absorbers, can anyone give a price idea for the units and is there any do's or dont's when fitting? I can see some kind of height sensors, is this something to be wary of?

Thanks in advance.

No problems replaceing rear shocks on a saloon, 2 bolts, one at the top and bottom. make sure to soak bottom bolt well with plus gas or wd40 first as it can be a bit of a bugger. ::)

Just a quick ? did you replace the tensioners with the belt as it is these that fail, not the belt [rare] :-?

Do you know if there are different shocks, am I correct in saying there is a leveling sysytem? do they all have it?

Some elites were fitted with ride hight system. to check have a look under the front bumper on the off side wing , if you have a compressor there you have ride hight system. Plus when you start the car the pump will run for a few seconds and you will hear it run. :y The rear shosks as far as i know will be the same but check first

Yes mine has that.... I thought the fuel pump was noisy the first time I started it ;D. There is a sensor in the shock itself, knowing my luck there going to be different, difficult to source and mega money. :(

No, there is not a sensor in the shock, just a gas pellet fed by an air feed, the sensor is on the drivers side rear trailing arm near the diff.

The only easy place to get the shocks is from Vx at £100+Vat each retail...!!

An alternative is to disable the self leveling setup and fit some KYB Gas-Adjust shocks from www.buypartsby.co.uk

Just a quick note to say I coughed up for a new pair of shocks  :o, fitted without any problems, except the tight bottom bit that ffcgary warned about. I thought they were bad and had that confirmed when the shock fell into 2 bits on removal!

After a trip round the block the ride is transformed, think i have to change my forum name now ;D

My old elite had leaking shock absorbers with self levelling, my local dealer quotes about £130 without fitting that's each. my local motor factors said dealer only part although i found some cheaper bilstein shocks without self levelling for about £60 a shock but no one could tell me if unplugging the self levelling system would throw up any fault codes or cause any problems.

Good luck.

p.s. after a looking at a bill of about £1200 to fix up my old elite i found it cheaper to trade it in for a much newer model.
