2002 model 3.2 petrol service
« on: 09 December 2007, 19:26:53 »

I looked at the Technical Info data on the forum for Omega Service:

The car was serviced by VX main dealer last friday and they agreed the special price of £149 all in.

When I picked it up I asked about the spark plugs - because they were changed exceptionally at 40000 and car has now done 73000 , they did not do the plugs as they reckon this is a £100+ job on a V6 and the special offer did not include V6 plug work (I did check this with them initially and they indicted that whatever needed to be done would be done in terms of the official service spec). Checked the book and yes the plugs were changed at 40000 and therefore they reckon no need to change until 100000.
Does this seem OK?

They also had no knowledge of scheduled auto transmission oil change and I note your comments on this in the tech part of this forum but if VX say transmission fluid ok for life of vehicle is it best just to wait until auto box  starts to get tired or develops a problem?

On a happier note they only charged £30 plus VAT for the oil LM 109337 and £24 plus VAT for all the filters - particle, and 3 others with numbers but not specified as to what they are - obviously oil ifilter s one of them.

£100+ for plugs on a V6? 'dangle berries'!!! even i can do them. It would take less than an hour.... experianced folk here i suspect can do it in minites.....

Vaux servcing is crap! Far better doing it your self!

Flush the coolant, not just a top up. - £20

Oil change with filter - £15

Brake fluid, FLUSH not just topup - £15

New brake pads & discs - £75

PLugs £20.

All of the above is with geniune Vx parts.

The official line is that the plugs need doing every 80k on the 3.2, so they should have been banking on doing them at this service. It is frankly a bit ridiculous not to include a standard service item such as this if it's supposed to be a service to manufacturer's recommendations. I don't know where they got 100k from either. 80k+40k = 120k.  :-/

It's not a 100 quid job, though, IMHO. Not too bad to DIY if you want to do them.

Automatic transmission fluid change is not on the schedule - only for "extreme conditions" but it's advisable to do it at around this mileage, I'd say. If it's changed before problems start to occur the box will last a lot better.

It's well worth doing servicing yourself, if possible, IMHO. 30 quid gets you enough oil for more than 3 changes on trade club and the fiters are only a few quid each.

Cam belt and tensioner kit is due every 40k / 4 years so they should have done that given they're not expecting to see it for another 20k (don't run the oil & filter for this long - change it every 4-5k). Coolant change is also advisable every 5 years but it's not on the service schedule.

So, a couple of important things missed there. Whatever you do get the cam belt change done at or before 80k - assuming it was done at 40k? (if not, do it ASAP)

If you get a trade club card - plenty of information on here on how to do it, 20 litres of the GM semi synthetic oil (most likely what they used) are yours for around 30 quid as a 4 for the price of 3 offer.

This oil will be fine, especially if you ignore the 20k oil change intervals and do it at 4-5k as we recommend (20k service intervals are based on what fleet managers want to pay for, not what's good for your engine).

If you go for the GM fully synth oil it will come in at around if not less than 15 quid for 5 litres.

Thanks for this - yes cam belt was changed by them at 40k and at same time at that mileage there was a cylinder head problem under warranty so they changed everything - for spark plugs  I think they are assuming 40k plus 60k = 100k but maybe it will be 120k as you say.

The transmission oil change was definitely something they had not come across in recent times as they spent ages checking - clearly they are not doing such changes. Will have to think about this further.

Have sent off application to Autobahnstormers re trade cost items.

If the cam belt was done at 40k it's due again at 80k :y

Initial recommendation was every 80k but this has been reduced to 40k due to the number of premature failures.

95% users here use Semi Synth.... on trade club you can get 20 litres for the price of 15.

Works out around £8 per 5L
