Secondary air injection
« on: 03 December 2007, 20:56:16 »

New noise today that I think from reading around is the SAI pump ... high pitched noise for about 2 minutes when starting from front right somewhere .. too dark to look properly now but I have tomorrow off .. so what do I look for ??  .. and when I find it is there anything I can do - cleaning/lubing etc - or is it a replacement only item ??

Tomorrow was going to be breather clean and rocker gasket day but this noise neds sorting first .. :(

The SAI pump can simply be disconnected. It does next to nothing anyway :y

As long as the solenoid valve for the vacuum feed to the SAI valve is present, or the ECU will complain.

Check the vacuum lines to make sure nothing is disconnected.  Also check the hoses leaving the SAIS pump amd going from the solenoid to the check valve (metal) for breaks, cracks, etc.  It is most likely the control solenoid if you want to fix it properly.  You can check this on a cold start by checking to see if there is vacuum present on the vacuum hose leaving the control solenoid.

Right front......from inside car or looking at front of car??

Secondary air injection pump is under passenger side wing, below headlamp area.
Under the drivers side front wing is the air compressor for your self-leveling rear suspension, this could also run at start-up.

They are a piston pump so reliable and quite noisey (but only for a short period)....if its a whine then it will be the SAI pump.

Things are getting worse .... :(

Had my head in there ... the noise is from one of the two small rollers of the aux belt on the left of the engine as you look at it from the front, the top one I can see clearly, it appears to just be a simple roller, although the Haynes picture implies it is a tensioning roller.. the lower one is a tad hidden and I think is the alternator. I think its the top one that is noisey.

The noise changes with engine revs and quietens down after about 3 minutes .. I guess the bearings warm up by then ... how difficult to change ??

Mr Haynes (page 1.8) only talks about changing the drive belt itself.

Can't see anything in Guides on Aux belts ... :(

Tensioner pulley is a piece of piss.....and yes, it is a tensioner

Simply use a 15mm ring spanner to release the aux belt tension (place on tensioner pulley nut and rotate clockwise) and then remove the nut holding the pulley....fit new pulley, tighten nut and re-fit the belt....takes about 10 minutes.

And you CAN get the pulley on its own for about 20-25 quid.

Just got back and didn't see the last 2 posts before I left ..... however  Mark_DTM struck without knowing it :)

....  I got to stealers .. flashed the ABS TC at youngster on the desk and said "I was told in the forum I only need the pulley" ... off he wandered .. out came a much older guy ... looked at EPC and says "Of course you only need the pulley ... its not a TC item but I'll give you trade price £20.48 +VAT that OK ?  "

So thanks to Mark_DTM I've saved over £25 .. guess I'll buy you a beer or 2 when we meet  :)

Thanks.. now once the lump cools down all I have to do is change it ... :)

Edit @ 1315  :)

Job done ...only question remains .. is there a Tq value for that centre nut ?? I've done it "tightish" at the end of the spring travel as I don't want to damage the spring mechanism by forcing it

Thanks again .. nice help ... as always   :y :y
