Possible head gasket failure? + exhaust query
« on: 17 December 2007, 16:09:12 »

past while ive been noticing the exhaust smoke being white, and always visible (i know its cold, but it jus seems to be alot compared to other cars), ive been keeping my eye on temperature, which seems to be fine... it hasnt moved really from the 90 mark... its just the exhaust smoke thats annoying me

today i was messing about an checking spark plugs etc, got them out and noticed theyre badly needing replaced (Was supposed to have been done by previous owner - but they look much more worn that than), also when i took off the oil filler cap i noticed some mayo on the bottom of the cap and in the filler tube - which i had never noticed before when i was checking it

previous owner only really usedt he car for short journeys, and lately so have i - which could explain the mayo, especially with the cold weather just now. as im not experianced with vaux engines jus thought id ask to what you lot think?

also, my exhaust sounds like its blowing when revving, but ive inspected it all and it seems to be fine!... its also got a bit of a rattle to it aswell, and ive noticed when in sports mode, and comming off the accelerator, around 4.5k and above the exhaust sounds like its blowing too... its a noise i cant really explain tho, but never seems to happen when im not in sports mode, and once revs drop down it sounds like it always does... anyone any ideas? hopin the silencers aint goin, dont have the cash to replace and MOT is soon lol

As you will see on many other posts, mayo on filler cap and neck is normal on Omegas especially if the car is being used mainly for short trips. Using Vx own-brand engine oil seems to minimise this, but either way it is normal.

Mayo on the dipstick however is a sign of problem.

As for the white smoke, this is normal and prbably only water vapour, if in doubt put you hand over the exhaust and trap some of the liquid, does it smell like antifreeze? But more importantly, are you actually loosing coolant?

Chances are you are not loosing coolant, so nothing to worry about... head gasket failure is rare pn V6.

At any rate, an oil and filter change will never be a bad thing, and this also goes for the air and fuel filters.

I've noticed mine steams from the exhaust a lot when in traffic, especially when it's cold out. Water vapour is a natural product of combustion and, in cold weather, the large exhaust system on an Omega takes a very long time to warm up. Until then you will see condensation in the rear view mirror. As Markjay says, as long as it's not losing water, it's fine.

Could be your exhaust manifold gasket on its way out. Hopefully it will be the drivers side.

cheers guys, you're right... dipstick doesnt have any mayo on it or anything, and dont appear to be losing any coolant, was just more to double check to be on the safe side, same with the steam - was just that it seemed to be rather alot compared to anything else ive noticed, not noticed any anti freeze smells from it either, was i was playing with exhaust earlier to see if there were any leaks in the system

pete - ill have a nosey about the gaskets when im replacing the spark plugs, think ill be doing all the filters tho, was told they were done not long ago but think it was a bit of a white lie! same with clunk i seem to have feon front suspension and was told most of the parts were replaced...

cheers again guys :D

Vx own semi does seem to produce less mayo IME, but short journies will cause it.  Remember that is getting in your breathers, so if using for short trips, clean breathers regular.

Doesn't sound like HG has failed :y
