Fault codes

Is there any cheapo widget i can get to read the fault codes on my 52 facelift 2.2?

Yep. Type Tech2 into ebay. you'll be greeted by loads of code readers, for approx £30... :)

I just bought one of these

Wanted it for the Omega and the Scenic, will post up how I get on.

Looks like I can use the simple lead and Hungarian Tech 2 software (Downloaded from web) for the omega and the interface itself for the Scenic.

That won't work for your omega, as your 98 omega is not obdii

3 options for pre OBDII Omegas, all propiertry, and won't work with other marques.

Cheapo Tech2 - £30 from ebay. Needs a laptop with true COM port, keeps flicking into hungarian
Opelscan - £250 ish, from member here - UKODB
Real Tech2 - £1000 - £4000 if you can find one

For the following reasons :

The Tech 2 appears to be a 16 pin to serial interface.

This unit has a 16 pin to serial interface that then connects to the box and converts to usb.

I have the 'hurdy gurdy software' already and I have a laptop with a 'true serial interface'

Therefore I should be able to use the lead without the interface for the hungarian software.

Cheers for your input guys, I'll post up how I get on

It will not work with the Hungarian software.  The hardware is completely different. The cheapo Tech2 is a dumb lead, with a multiplexor in front of it.  OBDII leads are intelligent PIC based leads.  There is no hardware resemblence between the 2, other than they both use a 16 pin 'OBDII' type connector (though 2.0/2.5/3.0 petrols are not OBDII compliant)...

Should do, as your 2.2 is OBDII compliant (ish).  It will read no more than your engine ECU though. Cheapo Tech2, Opelscan, and real Tech2 will read most onboard systems (admittedly cheapo Tech2 has trouble with quite a few)

Ahh, now you start talking in tongues to most people, you make absolute sense to me.

I will contact the seller and get him to send me the cheap tech 2 instead.

The cheapo won't work with non Vauxhalls.  IIRC, you wanted one for a Renault as well.  There is no low cost option that can do both :(
