Omega X25 ABS Lights

 Hello everyone. I drive a '97 Estate 2.5 V6.  I got the car used and it's speedometer/ABS/TC was dead. I was able to find a replacement ABS pump (XD) which my mechanic insisted was the same as my ABS pump (XJ).  To save trouble, we did a quick ECU swap and behold, the speedometer came back to life, the auto tranny shifting became very smooth, the ABS/TC lights would go on upon ignition and both off after a few secs, which I was told passing the self-check.  Everything fine up to this point but as soon   the car moves forward/reverse, at roughly10 kph, the ABS/TC light comes on.  This happens in 8/10 starts, once in awhile the lights do stay off and the ABS works.  

I did an ODB2/Opel test and everything checked out. My first suspect were the ABS wheel sensors but they read kph data fine. The only error code that shows up is "35 Return Pump Relay circuit intermittent".  It is erasable and no other error codes appear.      
h relay is the pump relay? they don't look replaceable but are fixed to the ECU board.

My last observation is that right after starting the car, with ABS lights off and I move forward there is a slight drop in fanspeed right before the ABS light blinks then stays.  I presume there is a draw in electricity. Could my ABS unit's grounding be faulty?

The symptoms you describe where exactly what I had, fixed by a refurbishment of the ABS ECU.. not sure if the pump is part of that or not.

If it is NOT then you might well still have an ECU problem ... mine was intermittent but slowly getting worse, or its possible the ECU connector is loose and vibration is giving the fault one the car is "rolling" ??

I hade my ECU refurbished by BBA Reman  ... they did an excellent job IMHO.. 5 day turn around and its been perfect ever since

Could be a grounding issue. The return pump will draw a heavy current and could cause the ABS ECU to drop into limp home if the ground connection is not man enough. Could also be a problem with the pump, or an incompatibility between the ECU and pump/valve body.

When you say the car moves at 10kph do you mean it's restricted as if the TC cuts in or just that this is the speed at which the fault appears? Another member had a similar problem as this recently... (not yet resolved AFAIK)

Hi Kevin,

That is the speed when the fault appears.  Actually the ABS/TC lights blink at that point then stays on.  

THere are only 2 bosch relays inside the black box. Unfortunately, they are welded to the circuit board and not the plug-in type. Would anyone know which relay (front/rear) controls the return pump circuit?  

I live outside the UK where Opels have been orphaned but I love this car too much to give it up.  It's not easy for me to just pack it up and send to BBA Reman.   If I knew which relay it was, i would create another relay socket wired piggyback into the existing relay and then use a plug-in type Bosch relay.  Sounds scary but it might work.   Now if I only knew which relay was giving me problems.   :-?

Sounds like the relay needs to be unsoldered. Could you not approach BBA and see if they will take just the PCB for repair rather than the whole ECU?

Failing that, try to follow the PCB tracks from the relay contacts to see where they go, or replace both relays. I think the only reliable way of repairing would be to unsolder the faulty relay and find a similar one to mount on the PCB. Leaving the old one attached is asking for trouble IMHO.

I belive the ABS/TC goes through a self test when it detects vehicle movement, 10kph might be about the right speed.

On a working system you can just about hear/feel it run the pump.

Is it then detecting an error and warning you at that point.

Sounds like it's ok on a static test, but fails the function test, probably doesn't help you much though.
