Smoke coming out from LH side
« on: 08 January 2008, 09:51:41 »

Hi,

I have problem with my vauxhall omega 2.5 CDX. Initially, the oil was
leaking from
the camshaft cover and white smoke (smell like burning oil) comes out. I
already replaced with the new gasket and cleaned up the breather plus plenum.
Now there is no sign of oil leak at the cover, but I still have white smoke comes out from
the left hand side of the engine as in this picture (it comes from
underneath / cylinder head):

This smoke starts to come out few minutes after warming up the engine.
I did some servicing such as replacing engine oil, plugs, cambelt and air
filter and there is a thin mayo (milky) near the tip of the oil filler and
none at the dipstick hole as in this picture:
http://www.soton.ac.uk/~ay1a06/smoke2.jpg
Also now the EML is stay on after ignition. Normally, it goes off after
starting the engine.
The paper clip test are:

Coolant level in the expansion tank is normal, no loss here.

I have no clue what is wrong and how to fix this. Please help me how to fix this.
Thank you.

Well, lets start with the fault codes....

17 - Knock sensor 2....which I can see from the second picture is not connected (orange connector has nothing plugged in!)

21 - Throttle Position Sensor ....is it connected (cant see from picture).

73 - Maf low......and splits in the inlet trunking, this might clear once the above is sorted.

As for the smoke, were they genuine cam cover gaskets used or pattern?

Note also, that it can take a few miles for ll the oil to burn off the manifolds following cam cover gasket change.

This happened to me. Mine were leaking so badly I was topping up with oil every day and every time I stopped it looked like the car was on fire. There was a lot of oil floating around the engine bay. In my case I was still getting small puffs of smoke a week after the gaskets were replaced and the oil mopped up and it took about 3 weeks before the burning oil smell finally went away !

also, that amount of mayo is nothing to worry about.  As long as its not on the dipstick you should be fine.

Dear All,
Many thanks  for the great advice. Mark , you are absolute correct. I plug the orange connector, the EML did goes away.
Now for the smoke part. I will drive around to see whether it will goes away. Hope it is nothing serious. It was kinda of mayo/ oily inside the plenum before this. But everything looks clean.
For the gasket, I bought from the Vauxhall southampton. I think they are original. the part no is 90511451 and cost 26.60 per bag(each bag got 2 gaskets). Bought 2 bags to replace right and left. I also replaced all those small o rings. However, i did raised the question about the sealant that this is green. However, they said this sealant(green) is listed in the database and recommended by the vauxhall. So  I used this sealant. Can this sealant caused leaking again? It kinda a melt liquid not the glue type.
The part no is 90542114 for this sealant.

Again, many thanks for the help.

I agree.  I had a nightmare with my 3.0 elite.  My breathers were blocked and caused the classic rocker cover gasket failure.  Not much oil loss but a constant smell of burning oil in the cabin and smoke bailing out of the wheel arches and round the scuttle when stopped.  As above like the engine was on fire.  I had my work done at a local garage as I didn't have the facilities at home and they fitted 3 (count them) three sets of non genuine gaskets each set lasted less than a week. You also need to make sure you use the right sort of gasket sealant. I learned the hard way - I thought the stories of genuine gaskets and black sealant was a myth, even the pattern ones look the same - from my experience they are the only ones that work.

The green sealant is for metal-metal joints only, eg under the front cam bearing caps if cams have been removed.

The correct sealant for the camcover gaskets is the black stuff, the EPC parts catalogue in the dealers is a bit misleading but this is no excuse for a VX parts counter....they are supposed to be the experts.

Get a tube of the black stuff and re-seal fairly soon, you will have to clean off all the green stuff but the seals should be OK to re-use if you dont leave it too long. You could try insisting on a replacement set as they gave you the wrong sealant.

Hi
I hope you bought your parts from Picador in Southampton or Chandlers Ford. Never ever buy anything from Hartwells in Southampton, they must be the worst dealer in the world, no the universe. I'm ranting again.
