2.5V6 Bit Of Advice Please!
« on: 09 January 2008, 19:03:59 »

Hi Folks,

good to be here.

Just bought a 'P' reg 2.5V6 CDX Estate and a couple of issues have appeared.

1.   Knocking sound from front steering/suspension area when over a bump also vibration when braking at slow speed, suspect these are related.

2. Any idea how much for a cambelt change, only ballpark figure just to give me a fright!

3. Big smell of petrol when stopped after a journey :-[

Apart from that it's fine.....sigh

Great forum, thank folks.

1, Normal, wishbones and drop links need changing
2, About £450 inc from main dealer maybe about £300 in a garage. I would advise maybe trying to attend a cambelt party which you will see threads for ;)
3, Fuel leak.......you will have to try and narrow down where the smell is the strongest and we can go from there.

Thanks for that.

Drop links and wishbones sounds pricey!!! Great start.

Would love to do the cambelt party, just worried about if it will ok until then as I have no evidence of when it was last changed.

Cheers for your help

Wishbones and drop links can both be brought on E-Bay about £50 a pair for FAI wishbones and about £15 a pair for FAI drop links and i would say about 40-50 mins per side, job done ;)
If in doubt with the cambelt, get it changed ASAP. To cut to the chase if it breaks the the engine basically becomes a uneconomical repair, ie- throw it away.

The buypartsby.co.uk wishbones are about £15 each and are reasonable quality.

Thanks Jason, i'll look into it.

Is it a tricky job to undertake?

Oh and while I think, there is no radio code.... presumably will have to go to Vauxhall to get the original code?

Thanks again guys

Actually, you may be in luck there. Have a look at this, http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1199824487/3#3. Apparently, you can get the code for free.  :o :o :o :y

Cambelt Kit (if doing DIY) is around £100 from Vx on TradeClub or £60-£70 for Gates or Conti kit.

Wow!!!

Thanks to you all....help in all directions.

Knackered now, so will investigate tommorow, but well impressed with this forum, what a friendly helpful bunch. An example some of my trade forums would do well to emulate.

Thanks again,

Thank you for your kind words...  :-[

Also, if doing the camblet it is recommended to change the water pump as well, simply because access is very easy with the cambelt off.

The item cost around £20-£30 and not to difficult to replace. Combine this with a cooling system drain and flush and new Vauxhall Red Antifreez for another Tenner.

The knocking was the air con rad which was just resting on the engine underpan and not actually fastened to anything!

Relieved & amazed :o
