Has anyone bought a chip off this man?
« on: 11 January 2008, 12:44:10 »

Hello everyone
I have been having a lot of trouble with an ebayer selling me a performance chip for my 2.5TD. Has anyone bought a chip from this man before and if so did it work well? The item number on eBay is :140196319985

I would also be interested if anyone knows about this seller as I would like the chip for the 3.0 MV6 (item 140197507307).

Was tempted to buy one but not sure if they would do anything nasty to foul up my engine electrical bits.
Not being technically minded I think when I get around to it I will get it properly chipped, someone on here does them ,sure he will read this thread and advise you.

Are you sure it was correcly fitted? they need to be soldered in.

Best person to see regarding chips for the TD is Omegatoy.

DO NOT CHIP you 2.5 diesel if you have an auto... it will blow the gearbox. Needs the stronger AR35 fitting.

Use Omegatoy for 2.5TD, I have one in mine.  428 ECUs do not have socketed chips, so buy a socket from maplins and fit.  Also, its not obvious which chip needs to be changed.

As tunnie said, don't chip an auto with AR25 box - the Omega was detuned for a reason...

I fitted omegatoys chip to my td aswell, same as you I had to fit a socket but the big difference is that omegatoy made it very clear that he offered support for it after I got it. Not that it needed it, my omega goes like Forest Gump on speed.

Send him a PM, your omega demands it 8-) 8-)

Omegatoy won't be responding to PMs for a while though, as he's 'moving house'!!

There isn't actually much difference, unless he's going to run the car on a rolling road and generate a map specific to the car, which I doubt.

The chip contains a modified map whatever it's marketed as.

The critical thing is that the firmare that's in the chip matches the exact model and revision of the ECU in your car and the engine. Going to someone reputable means this will hopefully be checked carefully before any changes are made. All bets are off for a chip from Ebay.

Get the wrong chip and damage to the ECU and possibly engine are not unlikely if there have been significant changes between your ECU and the one the code was originally poached from.

Been reading this with intrest, the only reason I got involved with megy's 2.5TD is because I used to drive (and still have) a BMW 325 TDSE, (same in line 6 pot engine) to say these Engines are different is a real big understatement, the 325 really does fly, and I mean fly, it goes like rocking horse sh-t, and still returns 37 - 50 Mpg.

I'm still not convinced that the Megy version of this engine is correct, either Vx or BM have seriousley detuned the power to suit the auto box. The missing 30 BHP or so from the Megy version,.... well I cant get my head round it?, the difference between these engines, even allowing for the Power to Wieght ratio is one big wide gap.

My BM 325 is currently SORN at the moment, but Im tempted to sort that and offer a drive to existing OOF member owner's of a Megy 2.5TD  to try for themselves... I think your chin's gonna hit the floor!

The chip is not going to damage the ECU unless you fit it wrongly as its nothing more than a bog standard 3 quid memory device plus on the petrol engines the EPROM is already socketed.

The concern would be what the map does to the engine.
