Power sounder / bonnet switch

Guys.  

I've not used my car for a month or so and have found that when i get out and lock it after a drive the alarm goes off after around 5 mins.  Reading other posts it sounds like the likely culprits are the power sounder or the bonnet switch.  However, once I have reset the alarm it doesn't go off again until I have been for another drive.  Does this change anything or should I still look to checking the above culprits?

Just as a general query, does anyone else find the sensors on the car to genaerally be a little sensative / unreliable?  I can actually set my emissions light off by filling up at specific garages.  And when some of teh other warning lights have come on I have found that it is the sensor that has been knackered rather than the thing it was sensing. ::)

I would try unplugging the bonnet switch and see if that improves matters.  Failing that, my money is on the power sounder.

The 3.2s are known to be a bit sensitive with respect to the post-cat lambda sensors reporting emissions problems. 2.6 is same generation of engine management so possibly the same problem.

Tried the bonnet switch, seemed ok, then just as it started to go dark outside the alarm went off again.  Looked at option of taking wipers etc off to unplug it but opted for pulling out the rubber bung and snipping the wires instead.  stopped the immediate noise prolem anyway.  If that cures the actual triggering of the alarm too i'll look to get a new sounder.

IIRC, the permanent and switched lives to the power sounder are fused at 80 amps, and they're relatively thin wire :o.

If I were you I would pull the cable ends out from under the scuttle and make sure they are properly insulated because if they short out all hell will break loose.

Thanks for the warning, have taped them for now.  In retrospect it was a pretty dick-head move on my part, lost my rag with it a bit.   :-[
I'm assuming there is no speceific fuse which can be pulled here.

Have tried intentionally setting the alarm off by locking the car up with the bonnet open and my hand on the bonnet switch, then releasing the switch.  I noticed that there was still another (albeit very quiet) alarm sounding from further down.  It is not noticeable when you shut the bonnet.  Any ideas what this maight be?

No, there's no separate fuse for the alarm. It's fed, along with a load of other things, from one of the fuses in the positive distribution box above the battery.

As long as the wires are well protected it'll be fine.

Not sure what the feint alarm will be. The main sounder should still be working as the power sounder only provides a back-up. I'm guessing the main sounder is faulty. It's under the scuttle with the power sounder.

Cheers for the help on this, will see if I can do the job properly tomorrow.  Just wondering about insurance ivalidity f the power sounder is disconected.
