Won't start after replacing rocker cover gaskets
« on: 12 January 2008, 17:47:41 »

95% sure I've got all the plugs and leads the right way round but car won't start properly.

Turn the key and the car revs slightly then cuts out.

Know I've probably missed something somewhere, and think it's likely to be a hose or 2 on the manifold switchover valve assembly at the back of the plenum.

Does anyone have any pictures of this area, or a list of what should be connected to what?

If anyone's got an Omega haynes manual, I know that there's definitely not a hose or anything in the bell shaped actuator (picture 17.19) so need to figure out what should be plugged in here.

Would take some pictures but it's gotten too dark outside to really see what I'm doing.

Sorted. Missed the pipe between solenoid and switchover valve.

Car still not running right (irratic idle now) but definitely starting.

Could either be air leak or ignition. Haven't done the fasteners on the plenum air pipes so could be either. Will investigate further tomorrow.

Sounds more like it's skipping a beat, TBH - could an air leak cause that?

is everything seated properly - plenum/ black ecotec bit on top?

Its also easy to dislodge the HT leads off the DIS pack which will lead to a misfire.

Going to check tomorrow.

In addition to the erratic firing, a loud "clicking" sound has also appeared. Any suggestions?

OK. Clicking problem now fixed.

1) O-Ring gasket under the plenum wasn't seated properly

2) Hydraulic lifters were dry - after about 30 seconds running after fixing the above, the problem went away

This left me with a quiet clicking sound that went away when the engine was fully warm. Tracked this down to the EGR valve.

PS Irratic idle was an air leak - once all the clips were done up, it idled properly.

That's why I left it last night - far too dark to see what I was doing properly...

Inlet manifold o-rings are cheap replacement..And tend to leak air if they are old ..

Specially in the cold weather cold engine condition..

Change them..
