Auto box problem
« on: 02 December 2007, 19:41:22 »

My 2.5cdx auto, bought last month with 138k on the clock. Have done 300 miles and today has come the first problem.

Auto box starting to make some loud clunking noises. Acceleration from still became very slow, but managed to get up to speed and drove the 20 miles home (could not tell if I was in 3rd or 4th gear though). There was a definite burning smell and by the time I got home there was a strong smell of gas in the car. 'Check Auto gearbox' was now being displayed on the screen.

Took her out a couple of hours later for a spin, all seemed well, no error messages but could still smell gas.

When I bought the car with it was a receipt from a garage from September that said 'put in 3 litres of gearbox oil and hardly any came out'. I guess this could be significent.

What do you think I could be looking at here?
Thanks.

I shall indeed to be doing this first, but am concerned that as it had 3 litres put in it 2 months ago, if it is low again then there is a major problem? Also, before all this happened there was a whining sound on acceleration (not present at idle), plus some vibrtion from the gear stick.

Just spoke with a auto box specialist. Explained how the problem is there when hot, and not cold, and he said it probably isn't low-oil related and given the mileage (138k) the box is probably knackered. Taking it in tomorrow for proper diagnosis. Quoted over a grand for a re-build which I would not be interested in, would prefer to risk it with a second hand replacement.

Had a serviced today with new oil and a computer test which brought up a couple of errors. Oil was burnt and was leaking into the sump. Replaced oil and gasket but was told no guarantees.

Drove it home, after about a mile it started clunking, slipping and then wouldn't get out of first gear. Problem is worse than when I took it in. Had to drive it home at 4000rpm in first doing 25mph along a B-road for five miles.

Having shelved out £145 for this, am not too happy at all. Gearbox is obvioulsy knackered. Any advice here please!

Would an autobox from a 3 litre fit my 2.5?

Have just wacked out loads £££ to get a used auto box put into my Omega. Similar problems exists - seems to start off in 3rd gear (selecting 1st gear and she pulls away quicker). There's a smell of burning gas but so far no slipping or clunking. ECU showing check gearbox. Was guaranteed the box was a good one and my mechanic reckons it needs a good run to clear away any damp or crap that was in it.  Could he be right or is the box another duff one?

Am feeling sooo peeved now, my first Omega experience is turning into a nightmare.
