Pardon my ignorrance, what would that do?

Also, Sport mode cannot be selected and the oil (4.7L) was fed in through the breather valve via a pipe - is that ok?

Have had the filter and selector switch cleaned but same problems exist. Where do I go from here?

Hi

I would suggest before forking out any more on guesswork have fault codes read and take it from there.

4.7L - that's nothing like enough....

should take at least 7L I would say and possibly more if it was completely drained.

The correct method is to fill through the sump plug WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING (makes a huge difference), until fluid runs out.

So I would get it topped up..

Would the fault codes pick up on low oil?

If it won't go into sport mode then is it stuck in winter mode? Only time i've ever known a box to pull off in third.

I don't know if its in winter mode as the button does not light up when its on. At the moment it is displaying both SAFE and AUTOMATIC GEARBOX on the screen. When driving, there are no clunks or slips which still gives me hope the box might be ok.

I got my mechanic to check the oil the proper way through the sump by adding some more and he reckons it was spot on. I still think it might by low though, so I'm going to have one last throw of the dice and add more oil through the breather pipe via a tube that has been left in. I know its not the right way, but I'm not giving anyone else a penny as I've spent enough. If that doesn't work that I will push it off a cliff.

There's a level plug on the drivers side of the box you unbolt the plug and, with the car level and the engine running, top up the level with a squeezy bottle/pipe, while doing this someone needs to engage each gear in turn for 10 or so seconds.

Have just wacked out loads £££ to get a used auto box put into my Omega. Similar problems exists - seems to start off in 3rd gear (selecting 1st gear and she pulls away quicker). There's a smell of burning gas but so far no slipping or clunking. ECU showing check gearbox. Was guaranteed the box was a good one and my mechanic reckons it needs a good run to clear away any damp or crap that was in it.  Could he be right or is the box another duff one?

Am feeling sooo peeved now, my first Omega experience is turning into a nightmare.
Unless the engine is asking it to reduce power (have you paperclipped it), looking like new box isn't good :(

I know that's the proper way, but I presume there is no access if the car is not jacked up? Also, I believe the paperclip test does not show up gearbox faults? I'm in Essex.

The problem is that if that plug isn't open you can't tell that you've got the right level of fluid in there. It could already be over filled.

Marks guide may help you here:-

As TB says, reading the codes using the paperclip test would also help diagnose issues further.

Will display Engine ECU codes but it may be that it's something to do with the engine that is causing the box to throw a error.
