I have a year 2000 2.5L CD Omega which I have owned since it was 6 months old and which has now covered 172,000 miles. It still drives great but for some months now the engine management light has been coming on at motorway speeds only. It only comes on when I am running at speed with light throttle. Open up the throttle or ease off, and the light goes out. It never comes on during urban driving

I already changed the air flow sensor and added STP injector cleaner to a tank of fuel but neither has made a difference. The car runs well even with the engine managment light on, but it is a little thirstier on fuel than it used to be.

When I have taken the car to my local garage their Tech 2 shows no fault codes.

How long must the light be on for the ECU to register and record the fault code? Anybody have any ideas what could be the fault?

They are doing something wrong I suspect.....

Have a search on here for 'paper clip test' and carry out your own paper clip fault code test......then post the codes indicated on here.

Its sudgesting that the passenger side O2 sensor is playing up.....not to surprising given the mileage.

They can be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath or obtain a known good second hand one.

I suspect its getting lazy/slow and hence when you gun it it gets a bit hotter and responds faster resulting in the light going off.


It does nicely highlight how naff your local garage is though......

Thanks so much. The O2 sensor - is this the forward facing sensor about the size of a spark plug on the downpipe just before the exhaust bends to run underneath the car?

I fiited a new 02 sensor to the passenger side cat but the engine management light is still coming on at motorway speeds. Which of these codes suggested the passenger side 02 sensor and what do the others mean please?
