My cheap omega, here's why
« on: 11 January 2008, 07:55:20 »

:'( OK Got my car  :y drove it for around sorting out petrol and washing as it had been a transporter :y all good so far apart from a little fart somewhere on the exhaust system, that was ok because I knew about that. all looking good so far but then I noticed steam comming out of the bonnet on the passengers side :-?
Short version...a split in the plastic side tank just below the main engine return  :'(  :'(....got the car home in short bounds and £240 later, ie on tuesday a new radiator is going in  :'(

The car was in Christchurch in the South Island, had to get it to Auckland in the North Island then had to drive it to Whangarei which is just below the Bay of Islands....168kms or about 104miles.
Still really happy with it but it was not the start I had hoped for but I put some two pac glue on the small split and it ran like a dream for 100km's/60miles or so so I know there is a great car that just needs some work and it will be a great car again  8-)
I was going to look at getting a radiator from the UK but can not afford to wait for about month or so without a car. ;D

I am worried that I might have blown the head gasket in the last drive, to check out if I found the right radiator.
It now seems to just spit any water I put into it out the exhaust and the coolant level light comes on after about 5 mins  :'(

I'm an Aussie and I didnt know you could get Omegas in NZ

Was it imported privately or are/were they on general sale?

We dont have them in Oz as far as I know

generally speaking anything under a 3.8litre engine in Australia is only used as a starter motor for a Holden Commodore ;)

Hi Omegacdx,
the omega's in NZ are Opel's that are imports from Japan.
There are not too many of them, some were private imports but some others were brought in by import car dealers. Most imports are japanese cars but there are some dealers who bring in merc's, bmw's saab's etc.
I love this Omega of mine as it is very highly spec'ed compared to a Commondoor  ;D of the same age. Would I have a Commodore...yes I would and this Omega of mine will probably cost about the same as a simlar age Commodore once I get it running right...but being a poor ex-student this is a bit of a body blow having to get the radiator and I am guessing the head gasket and exhaust done  :'(
I wonder if I can shoehorn a LS7 427ci (7ltr) V8 into it  ;D ;D ;D

Ok I have a new radiator  :y but now I have to do a full head gasket, this is not going to be fun, I have had rough quotes of about $2500 to do it ( 3 times the cost of the car )  :'( and even the head gasket set they are wanting $842.00 for the full gasket set....thats like £340  :'( and I have seen full sets on UK Ebay for £50 plus whatever it will cost to ship to NZ, does anyone have any idea's how long it would take to get here :question
Now all I have too do is find an old school garage that is not paying for a fancy workshop and a cappicino machine  ;D

UPS from GB to NZ would be about £50. Delivery around 6 days.  :y

Dumb question, I think I might have found an X25XE out of a Vectra B, can it be slotted straight into my Omega or are there different bell housings etc? :question
Never mind.... the price they wanted for it was too high anyway
