recuring screeching noise coming from engine

just bought a damged cdx of ebay for spares for my cd. doesnt look to bad considering the 169.000 miles. only frontle damge and suspect cooling system is ruptered.
any ideas on the screeching noise?

Try it without the aux belt on (if a v6, only briefly, as this drives water pump)...

sorry 2.0ltr, sounds as though its coming from the head,  head gasket? proper screechy like a fan belt but not.

Remove aux belt.  failing that, check the cambelt tensioners and pulleys

Sorry to bump this thread but this is happening to my car. V6, 2.5L Auto.

I'm not a technically minded geeza so where is the Aux belt, if it's that is it best to also replace water pump or just the belt?

The belt seems spot on & fairly new with regards to the cambelts but looks can bee deceptive.

I had a similar problem, initially thought it was the aux belt but turned out to be the cam belt tensioners.  Annoying as they were 3 days old at the time, bad batch apparently.

Since my cambelt and tensioners are an unknown quantity to me(car may have done 100,000 but don't know when the belts where last done - can't assume they where done at 80,000) I am booking the car in next week to get them done, better safe than sorry.

EDIT:

Hmmm.....

Been reading back and I think it might just be the top left roller on the front of the engine block (which is also a tensioner apparently), cost around £25. Think I may just replace that on Monday and see if that cures the noise.

For my motor can I assume the part number is: 9157962

Just out of interest, if I was to tighten the belt (it "seems" tight enough), where would the best place for me to do this?

On Ramps.... yes I know that bit ;D

But where is the water pump located and what do I tighten?

The pully your refering to is the tensioner which is the spring loaded self tensioning type. To release it put a socket and bar on the centre nut and turn clockwise this should move the pully. I found it easier to fit the belt over the alternator pully last, than the way the Haynes book of lies recommends which is fit belt on  tensioner pully last :y
The water pump is located in the centre of the block and can be identified by the pully which has a smooth running surface as opposed to grooved.

2nd question... if I get the top left roller can I also buy just the cambelt (without all the other gubbins in  a kit), may as well get that done at the same time as the tensioner pulley is off.

2) Do you mean the cam belt or the aux belt?

There is quite a lot more work involved in changing the cam belt and this MUST include changing the tensioners as well as the belt since the tensioners actually fail first in most instances. It must be changed at 40k/4 year intervals so if you're close to that it may as well be done.

Regarding the aux belt, have a look at it. If it's staring the crack and looking tired then change it. If it's in reasonable condition it may as well be left as it is a very quick job to change.

Thanks for the answer chaps....

OK, got car booked in for next week to get the full cambelt/rollers/tensioners done  :y as I definately think it is the top left tension pulley that's screeching. Don't know whether to risk going to the garage in the car though as I can't afford to pay another £65 to transport it 4 miles up the road.

Good year so far.... auto gearbox and now this.... has topped nearly a grand to fix by the time this has been done and the wife isn't happy :(

As Kevin Wood suspects, you may be confusing the auxiliary and cambelt pulleys. The one on the outside is the auxiliary pulley and belt. The cambelt pulleys are not visible behind the front cover, which obviously has to be removed to gain access, but these and the cambelt are the most important job to be done within the 40k mileage intervals.
Not too serious if your auxiliary belt system fails. Easily fixed. Cambelt/pulley/tensioner failure is invariably catastrophic.
